HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-10-23-TCC-min Town Celebrations Committee Minutes of Meeting October 23, 2019 Lexington Community Center Members Present Lorain Marquis, Chair; June Baer, Kim Coburn, Karen Gaughan, Cerise Jalelian, Julie Miller, Wayne Miller, Bill Mix, Rita Pandey, Sandy Podgorski, Sue Stering Members Not Present Glen Bassett, Suzanne Caton, Wei Ding, Linda Dixon, Mary Hutton, Paul Jenkins, Gresh Lattimore, Sondra Lucente, Geetha Padaki, Dave Taylor, Bob Tracey, Sam Zales Guests: Cody Crogan, Lions' Club; Bill Carlson, Lions' Club; Dawn McKenna, Tourism Committee; Suzie Barry, Board of Selectmen Business: • The chair reported that a quorum was present and the meeting was called to order at 7:03 pm. • Lorain welcomed the visitors to the meeting. • In regards to the minutes of October 9, 2019 it was clarified that no vote on the number of photos a veteran can submit for the slide slow was held. The request for photo form clearly states one photo to be submitted. If the veteran submits more than one photo it is left to our discretion as to include a second photo or not. • Minutes from the meeting of October 9, 2019 as amended were approved. Patriots' Day 2020: • June stated that there was a stakeholders meeting on October 10 concerning whether or not to discontinue the Sunrise Youth Parade. No decision was reached and a survey was sent out to the attendees. • June presented the results of the survey that was sent to the stakeholders. Out of 40 surveys sent, only 10 were completed-- a 25%response rate. Opinions were split evenly concerning either discontinuing or continuing the Sunrise Youth Parade. • June stated that due to the lack of response and no clear mandate, there would be no changes to the events held by the Town Celebrations Committee. • A discussion ensued with the visitors over the Town Celebrations Committee decision to look into changing the Sunrise Youth Parade and ceremonies. • After the discussion, Dawn McKenna, Suzie Barry, and Cody Crogan left the meeting. They were thanked for attending and sharing their opinions. Veteran's Day Breakfast on November 2, 2019: • Sandy Podgorski stated the Veterans' Day Breakfast event is in excellent shape. • George Gamota will give the keynote address at the breakfast. • The Town Celebrations Committee has a new all-weather 2 foot by 10 foot banner that will be displayed at the Veterans' Breakfast. • The slide show includes photos of 93 veterans. The music included with the slide show will play at the breakfast but will be muted at the Veterans' Day program. • Members of the committee will be at St. Brigid's church on Friday, November, 3 pm, 1 to set up for the breakfast They should arrive at 7:30 am on Saturday for the breakfast. • The clergy we set up for the breakfast has fallen through. Karen is working on getting a replacement. • Committee members were assigned stations at the breakfast to help. • There will be 3 members from IAL at the breakfast to help out with the coffee service • Rita will print out name tags for any names of attendees to the breakfast that we get in advance. • Lorain reminded committee members to wear their polo shirts or a white shirt with dark pants to the Veterans' Breakfast. Dave Tabeling will be there and will take a group photo for the Lexington town report. Veterans Day Parade and Program, November 11, 2019: • Sue Stering updated the committee on the Veterans Day program. Essays are due this Friday. High School teacher Michael Egbert says we have a good response. Several teachers are working with him this year. • We are waiting to hear how many essays have been submitted. So far we have received 5 permission slips. • Art work has not had much response yet but the deadline is Nov. 4th. The artwork is not being juried, it only needs to be matted and displayed. • We will be inviting Michael to the Veterans' Breakfast. • Past winners have been invited to the parade and the ceremony • Kim has the program in Publisher. Rita can work on the program with her to have it camera ready for Veterans Day. We will order: 175 copies of the essay booklets and 200 copies of the program. • The Youth Commission and football team will be marching in the parade on Veterans Day. • The parade will step off at 10 a.m. sharp. We will adjust the pace of the parade so there is not so much time to wait before the program starts. • The football team will be sitting in the balcony if they stay for the ceremony.
