HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-09-26-LHS-minSeptember 2019 To: The Lexington High School Site Council From: Andrew Stephens Re: September 26 Meeting LHS School Site Council met on September 26th, 2019 from 6:00-7:30 pm in Room 505D in the World Language Building Present: Andrew Stephens, Cathy Swan, Katie Cutler, Karen Griffiths, Suzanne Lau, Ed Li, Khoi Le, Sheera Knecht, Angela Chang, Nancy Shepard, Ling Lang, Sam Offset, Erin Barrett, Kate Volgelzang and Kate Riley Guests: Christina Lin and Sonali Shah Approved the June 19th meeting minutes Site Council Administrative Business Introductions - this is the first meeting of the school year so we welcomed new members to the site council Cathy Swan is co chair *Reviewed and approved contact info for members *Meeting dates approved for the year Discussion: How is school going so far? *Some classes are hard to get into so students are frustrated *We need to remind parents not to park in crosswalk when dropping off kids in the morning *New 6 Day Rotating Schedule -there are good days and bad days -Juniors and Seniors definitely feel the change the most -some logistical issues -1:00 lunch- too late- end at diff times -Bio blocks are back to back only AP -AP bio has double blocks but some 55 min and some 65 mins so one class has 30 min more of class than other -you can feel that the classes are longer and feels like he is learning more but amount of homework is the same -some kids notice that they don't have to prepare for every class everyday -F block is very flat- tired been a long day- what will it be like next year 8:30 am -hard to figure out how to schedule things outside because of rotating schedule -there is an app to track your schedule -may ask for student feedback later in the year- need to live with it for awhile Strategic Plan *Synthesis Committee- took all data from community and looked for threads and themes and made statements of Mission, Vision and Core Values - *Work in progress -get feedback -We all belong -Be courageous -You are enough -Andrew focused on these during student assemblies -English class took a look- kids felt like it was trying to cover all the basis leading to contradictions -kids felt that they were checking all the boxes - saying the right thing- but how can we bring this to the community and bring this to life? -teachers were mixed and some were not that comfortable - some thought `this is not what we teach" -does community line up with these statements and support this -this is a good place to start a conversation among staff, students and parents NEASC *Push to next meeting MSBA *Statement of Interest for new LHS was submitted with expectation that it would be rejected initially as Hastings is still -we have qualified for a senior study -Sept. 24 group of MSBS will come to take a closer look -we fit all the requirements - answer will be in Dec. to see if we get invited to next step to build new school Small Group discussion of School Improvement Plan *Get rid of A +? *Mission Statement -need a deeper dive -abbreviated mission statement? *Core Values -vision of graduate? -what is measurable in classroom? -how do we foster this within the curriculum? -how to balance? -how to prepare for standardized tests? -how do we "track growth"? -how does mission statement fit in? -how do we represent this visually? *Vaping -how do we address this growing problem? *Input from Students and Parents -explain to students and parents the procedure when there is a question or concern -feedback on teachers from students and parents -how? -where does feedback go? -grading -is there inconsistency across same classes? -how do we address? *College and career planning -expand -internships and summer bootcamp? *SEL *Limit number of AP classes a student can take? *Abbreviated mission statement? *IBLOCK -how is it being utilized? - is there opportunity for 1:1 or not feasible? *DEI- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion -what does this look like? -how do we incorporate?
