The adjourned meeting of the Finance Committee was held in Carey 1-Tall , Thursday Evening , 41:1arch 19th, 23 members being present. ChairmanL77,r. Locke being absent , E. A. INellington representingthe Cemetery Committee of the town, appeared before the Committee and recommended an appropriation of ' 200. to be made in addition to the balance of ,652. 56 left over from last year, in order to cover the expense ;which the Committee anticipate during the coming year. One of these expenses was a fence on the northwester- ly side of the cemetery , which had been needed for a good many years , and which the Committee hoped and expected to put in this year. It was voted that an appropriation of '#` 200. 5 for cemeter- ies for the ensuing year, should be recoLTL ended. Article 21. H. G. JanvTin appeared before the Committee in support of the appropriation asked for in Article 21 for the r-ork of Macadamizing Percy Road. In the previous meeting of the Finance Committee , it had. been decided to recoirnnend an indef- nite postponement of this Article , and at the present meeting after .:�'r. Janvrinr s talk the Committee did not see fit to f take any further action. Street Lights. iiess. Miles and Sweetzer of the .Electric +;fight Co. appeared before the Committee in regard to an appropria.tie for s`reet lights , and in accordance with the saggesti , at the last meeting of the Finance Committee , state Page 2. they would be willing to replace, free of expense to the town, the eleven are lights now situated off of Massachusetts Ave., with 52 incandescent lights, representing the same cost to the town. These new incandescent lights to be distributed at the discretion of the Select Tien, except that their distribution should not involve any expense upon the Electric Light Co. for extra poles. Hr. Miles further recommended that under the improved conditions of incandescent lighting, he strongly advised the removal of all are light%from the town, replacing same with the new type high efficiency, incandescent lamps, and stated the Electric Light Company would be willing to mare this exchange, provided they could be sure of a contract with the town for a reasonable length of time, and of no material reduction in its present amount, The'Finance Committee voted to recommend an appropria- V tion Of ,1400i. for street lights for the ensuing year, and 6".--0 to recommend further to the town that the eons commibtte n]Rda-aa®pvupon 6, should be asked to look this matter over and make .&&chew ire commendatiorSto the i. town upon the same subject, and under the improved conditions of incandescent lighting, now found possible. April 19 th. It was voted to recommend no appropriation, but that V the drum corps be hired at the same rate as last year, same to be paid for from the expected returns from licenses granted on that day. Schools. The School Committee reported that owing to an extra- ordinary expense during the past two weeks of something over 6300. for changes in the schools to improve the fire exits, and also to anticipate further expense in connection with improvement in the High School, that it would like to increase its request for appropriation from $34,000. to V4,500. It was voted to recommend an appropriation for t D��s 5• Page 3. of �'34 ,500. upon the understanding that the extra amount of this appropriation was to be used in improving the grade of our Nigh School. Fire Dept . y r. Phillips asked for an appropriation of %5500. This was expected to cover the cost of another permanent man in the central engine house , required by the absence of the regu- lar driver, either at meals or vrhile driving the watering cart in the hummer. This extra expense did not seem to be required, and was not approved by the Finance Committee, In the discussion regarding this, it was suggested that the exact pressure and capacity of the hydrants in all parts of the town, should be carefully tested and recorded., so that the Fire Department and the Water Commissioners night know at all times to what extent they could rely upon the ordinary water service for fire protection, zrithout the use of the s teaw 'ire erigine . It -was voted to recommend b appropria-___ tion of S4900, for this Department for the ensuing year. Inspector of Cattle . Voted to recommend appropriation of �100. Inspector of Provisions . Voted to recommend an appropriation of 1200. , and that the select ? en restrict the licenses for slaughtering , in so far as is possible , and > so that the fees for inspection may not exceed the amount appropriated. Committee recommended that only the lalst two items should be undertaken this year, and that -,,n al-,propriation of ,2100,. for this purpose should be recor�ne-nd.ed. Article 2n. -.r. Fierce , Chairman of Select Teen , recomiiiended " that A250. should be appropx°i�ted for repairs on the tone bu gilding in East Lexington, and this was so recommended. Article 15. It was recomrrlended. _that the suggestion of the Select Yen in their report to the Town, regarding the collection of taxes , should be adopted by the Town, that is , that the taxes should become due Sn(A payetble on or before ljeccrlbe-n_ '1ct of each year. Balances, - it was voted that the surplus of -150, on acco rx:.t of the steam roller and 6?4. 50 on account of new hose , shc)uld be transferred to the contingent fund, and these accounts closed. That the V825. over-draft on account of the steam boiler for crusher, and ,$96. 58 over--raft on account of the Grant Wit. grade crossing, should be paid from the contingent fund..
