HomeMy WebLinkAbout2555 Circular letter, North Brookfield Free Public Library, concerning exchange of town histories, July 3, 1890 NORTH BROOKFIRLD, MASS, July 3, 18go.
DF,AR SIR :
After having been upwards of ten years at work on it,
the town of North Brookfield, Massachusetts, has published
a History of the Town, that is said to be as fine a piece of
work, of its class, as has ever been published in this State or
this country. The testimonials in relation to its general
excellence that have been received from prominent gentlemen
in this and many other States, and also from England, who
are competent to most intelligently judge of its merits, place
it in the very front rank of historical works of this kind.
The early Indian history is especially interesting, and was
very carefully compiled, requiring many years of faithful
labor and research.
A very large edition was printed, and as quite a number
are still owned by the town, at the last annual town meeting
authority was granted to the Board of Trustees of the North
Brookfield Free Public Library and Reading Room to ex-
change copies of the History of the Town for histories of
other towns, and for biographical works.
Will you please inform me if there has ever been pub-
lished a history of your town? If there has been, please
give me the full address of the party with whom we can cor-
respond, with a view to an exchange of a copy of the History
of the town of North Brookfield, Mass., for a copy of the his-
tory of your town. We shall be glad to mail to you, or
to any one you may designate, a copy of the Prospectus of
the History of North Brookfield, Mass., which was printed
in pamphlet form, and which contains the written opinions
of many of the leading critics in this country and England,
who have examined the same, giving over their own signa-
tures the most flattering testimonials of the value of the
work.
We do not know to whom, in your town, we should
address this circular letter, but we have decided to send it to
you, asking you to please acknowledge its receipt your-
self, or to give it to the Chairman or Secretary of the
Board of Trustees of your Public Library, or to some other
person who will kindly take the time and trouble to give us
the information desired.
Soliciting a response at your early convenience, I am,
Respectfully yours,
THEODORE C. BATES,
Chairman of the Board of Trustees
of the North Brookfield
Free Public Library and Reading Room,
North Brookfield, Mass.
Or to
MRs. EMMA S. LUDDEN, Librarian,
North Brookfield, Mass.
