2026 MINUTEMAN CANE AWARD
The Select Board of the Town of Lexington, Massachusetts, hereby recognizes and presents
the 2026 MINUTEMAN CANE AWARD to:
LINDA DIXON
The Minuteman Cane Award Selection Committee is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2026 award is Linda
Dixon. She richly deserves this recognition for her tireless, skillful and inspiring service to many facets of our town
and especially the veteran’s community.
Linda has had a full life of service, including 20 years in the Army National Guard--starting as one of its first women
and retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. A graduate of Tufts and Fletcher, she also has served her alma
mater for many years, as both employee and volunteer, with roles including Secretary to the Tufts Board of Trustees,
President of the Tufts Alumni Association, and a leader in fundraising. For her “exceptional service for the
institution,” she was the first woman to receive the university’s highly prestigious Hosea Ballou Medal.
In retirement Linda has focused her many talents and boundless energy on needs in Lexington, her home for 35 years.
Now approaching her 85th birthday, she has been a very active member and leader of the Town Celebrations
Committee since 2010 and an election officer (warden) for more than a dozen years. When the LexVets needed a new
chair in 2015, Linda stepped up and led the group to new heights over the next decade, expanding program offerings
and community partnerships and, as one colleague described, “doing whatever was needed to keep the organization
together.” In 2020 she also accepted the Select Board’s request to chair a new Monuments and Memorials Committee
to build a database of the Town’s over 140 markers and memorials, work that spanned five years.
Linda inspires others with not only her voluminous, impeccable and often silent work, but also with her effectiveness
in connecting across organizations and generations. In particular, she has facilitated multiple opportunities to bring
veterans and young people together and help students learn more about history and military service. Examples
include supporting the Never-Fading Poppy Project and engaging STEAM students in finding and documenting
forgotten memorials. Since at least 2017 she also has partnered with an LHS social studies teacher on the annual
Veterans Day Essay Program and Panel, to which she brings veteran and active-duty soldiers to share their stories.
Two of Linda’s many admirers summarize particularly well why she deserves this award:
“I have not known anyone more willing than Linda to work for the betterment of her community.”
“A cheerleader and always upbeat and ready to jump in to fill an important role while running rings around
younger members, she is an inspiration to all who know her.”
Linda is the epitome of an active and inspiring senior resident of Lexington. It is therefore with great pleasure that we
proclaim Linda Dixon to be the 2026 Minuteman Cane Award recipient. Congratulations!
Issued in grateful appreciation this fifteenth day of April 2026.

2026 Pat Flynn Outstanding Youth Award
In recognition of exceptional service, leadership, and dedication to the Lexington community, the Select Board is honored
to present the 2026 Pat Flynn Outstanding Youth Award, supported by the Charles E. Ferguson Youth Recognition Award
Fund and the Pat Flynn Youth Fund, to Sarah Kochi.
SARAH KOCHI
A graduating senior at Lexington High School, Sarah Kochi has distinguished herself through thoughtful leadership,
genuine kindness, and a deep commitment to the Lexington community. As Co-President of the Lexington Youth
Commission, she has helped lead service initiatives that bring people together and support neighbors of all ages, including
food drives, toy drives, and outreach to local seniors. She approaches service not as an occasional activity, but as a
meaningful responsibility and a way to strengthen the town that has given so much to her.
At Lexington High School, Sarah serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook, leading with creativity, care, and an inclusive
spirit that helps others feel valued and heard. She was also selected to serve on the English Department Hiring Committee,
a distinction that reflects the trust faculty place in her judgment, integrity, and maturity. Academically, she has challenged
herself across both the humanities and STEM, earning recognition as an Honor Roll student, National Honor Society
member, and AP Scholar with Honor.
Sarah’s service extends well beyond the classroom. Through the Lexington Recreation Department, she has spent her
summers mentoring children and adapting activities to ensure campers of all abilities feel included. As a leader in the
LHS SADD Club, she has helped teach elementary school students about bullying, substance abuse, and safe decision-
making. She has also mentored younger students through Einstein’s Workshop and served as an umpire for Lexington
Little League, offering younger children both guidance and a positive example.
Sarah has also shared her love of literature, history, and Lexington’s cultural life through her work as a Historical
Interpreter at Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House. There, she welcomes visitors from around the world with warmth,
insight, and enthusiasm, helping make history vivid and accessible. Her work has also included supporting a summer
writing camp for young girls and serving as Co-Master of Ceremonies for Patriots’ Day on the Lexington Battle Green.
In every role, Sarah brings intelligence, poise, humility, and a sincere desire to connect people to one another and to the
stories that shape this community.
In her own words, “Community service means everything to me. It is woven into every piece of my life and every piece
of Lexington.” Through her compassion, intellectual curiosity, and devotion to others, Sarah Kochi embodies the spirit of
Pat Flynn’s legacy and the very best of Lexington’s youth.
The Select Board is proud to recognize Sarah Kochi with the 2026 Pat Flynn Outstanding Youth Award for her
unwavering commitment to service, her inclusive leadership, and the many ways she has enriched the Town of Lexington.
Congratulations, Sarah, on this well-deserved recognition. Your exemplary service, leadership, and generosity of spirit
have made a lasting impact on the Lexington community.

SELECT BOARD OFFICE
Proclamation
Whereas: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month is observed during
the month of May to recognize the contributions and influence of AANHPI persons as part of the
whole history, culture, and achievements of the United States; and
Whereas: AANHPI Heritage in the United States was celebrated at least as early as 1978 and was made into a
month-long event in 1992; and
Whereas: Lexington is proud to be home to a large AANHPI population that contributes greatly to the prosperity
and enrichment of our community; and
Whereas: during AANHPI Heritage Month, we acknowledge AANHPI persons have lived and worked in the
United States for more than 200 years, and have made significant contributions to all facets of the
United States such as economy, culture, education, politics, arts, law enforcement, military, literature,
science, and technological developments despite institutional and systemic injustices designed
to silence and cover up these achievements and contributions; and
Whereas: during AANHPI Heritage Month, we acknowledge the additional determination, hard work, and
perseverance AANHPI persons must put forth to be heard and seen and that these additional efforts are
a result of inequitable institutional and systemic injustices; and
Whereas: despite these contributions and leadership, the role of AANHPI persons in the U.S. has been
consistently overlooked and undervalued in education including areas such as math, science, literature,
and American history; and
Whereas: we celebrate the achievements and contributions of AANHPI persons that enrich our history, society,
and culture, we must also acknowledge a darker aspect of the AANHPI experience in America,
which includes painful stereotypes, structural discrimination, injustices, and periods of hate and
violence. These actions come at the cost of the mental health of the AANHPI community and
distorts the larger community's ability to recognize the humanity in us all; and
Whereas: the AANHPI communities are among the fastest growing populations in Lexington; and
Whereas: AANHPI communities in Lexington have shared their rich culture and traditions while representing their
communities through public service and advocacy; and
Whereas: diversity represents one of our greatest strengths, and by recognizing the contributions and
accomplishments of AANHPI persons, our town will put our values of inclusion into practice to build a
brighter future for all of our residents; and
Whereas: Lexington is committed to providing comprehensive support to ensure that Lexington is equitable and
welcoming to all people; and
Whereas: each of us has a personal responsibility to prevent the spread of misinformation, stereotypes, condemn
violent acts in any form, support all fellow community members, and reject stigma, hate, and bias in
all its forms; and
Whereas: Lexington is proud to celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month, and commemorate the essential contributions,
sacrifices, and accomplishments that the AANHPI communities have made.
19
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, THE SELECT BOARD of the Town of Lexington, Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim the

Proclamation
Whereas: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive fatal
neurodegenerative disease in which a person's brain loses connection with their muscles, slowly
reducing a person's ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe; and
Whereas: thousands of new amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cases are reported every year, and estimates
show that every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS and someone passes away from ALS;
and
Whereas: on average, patients diagnosed with ALS survive only two to five years from the time of diagnosis;
and
Whereas: the exact causes of ALS are unknown and there is no known cure for ALS; and
Whereas: people who have served in the military are more likely to develop ALS and die from the disease than
those with no history of military service; and
Whereas: securing access to new therapies, durable medical equipment, and communication technologies is of
vital importance to people living with ALS; and
Whereas: clinical trials play a pivotal role in evaluating new treatments, enhancing quality of life, and fostering
assistive technologies for those living with ALS; and
Whereas: the ALS Association is the largest philanthropic funder of ALS research globally and has committed
more than $154 million to support more than 550 projects across the United States and 18 other
countries; and
Whereas: the ALS Association is committed to make ALS livable and cure it for everyone, everywhere; and
