1. Review of Lexington Economic Development Trends
Melissa presented the Economic Development Trend Report with committee members
providing comments and feedback
a) Do total number of employees include public school and town pubic
employees? There is a need to confirm. When counting private employment,
town government and school should be excluded.
b) The increase of office space is comparable to neighboring towns in percentage,
but small in absolute sq footage compare to Waltham and Burlington
c) There is little lab/office space renovation compared to the residential housing,
this contributed to the smaller increase of commercial assessed value.
d) Lincoln Lab on the federal side, no tax is levied.
e) Various tax incentives/abatements were provided to businesses
f) Lexington office/lab space vacancy rate (5% – 10%) is in normal range.
g) Small businesses are paying the same as large businesses but may not have
incentive and abatements.
