HomeMy WebLinkAbout2503 Report of the Highway Surveyors on the subject of stone crushing equipment, March 4, 1872The Highway Surveyors as a Committee
Submit the following
Report
They visited the towns of Arlington Waltham and Watertown
and also had the memoranda of Nason & Elliott engineers of
Somerville and also cost of running Blakes Crusher it can
crush from 20 to 30 cubic yards of stone per day and the cost of
running is estimated from 13 to 14 dollars per day. The jaws
cost 9 apiece and sometimes last only a few days but have
been known to last two months. The cost of the machine
is $1200 dollars. They do not own the machine but pay 112 1/2
per cubic yard for crushing the stone the owner bearing all
the expense of running all crushed ready to put on the
stone cost the twon 200 per cubic yard. The other towns
own their machines which with Engine cost from 28.00, to
to 3000 dollars The town of Arlington pay 12 dollars for
the jaws which are warrented. last town 3 days to 12. The estimate of the
towns as to the cost of running is the same as that of Somerville
and the amount crushed is from 25 to 40 two horse loads for
day of 40 hd [hogshead?] per load costing 40cts per load to crushed and to
this must be added the cost of teaming the stone to the crusher
By experience it has been proved that stone should never
be put on less than from 5 to 7 inches in depth and this
necessitates the spreading the entire width of the road
The road from Arlington Centre to Cam[?] heading to the crusher
is a fair Sample of what a broken stone road ought to be
and the expenses of repairing our main road would be as
large as in Arlington which cost 16,50 per rod above the centre
of the town and 35 per rod below as this is much wider but
that part part above which is about the same width as
our main road would a fair estimate of the cost of our
own yet it will be seen that it would require a large
outlay of money for a few years and doing througher
work The heavy travel on our roads is not near as great
as that on the roads of Arlington Waltham or Watertown
who on an average have less than 25 miles of road
and their appropriation 13 thousand dollars and as we have less
than half of Valuation of these towns with over 50 miles
of roads and think under existing curcumstances it is not
desirable for the town to purchase a brusher but that Gravel
can be used for the presant or certainly till the town
can appropriate 7 or 8 thousand dollars
