Gentlemen Having heard with equal surprise and regret that the Committee called a Building Committee, and appointed at a Town meeting holden on Nov. 2d 1858, to carry into effect the Report read by a Committee on that day, in favour of building a New school-house in the East Village, intend to build a house somewhat similar to one recently erected in West Cambridge, & called "Cotting Academy", - We the undersigned beg leave to say that such a statute does not at all come within the letter or spirit of our Report, in our opinion, and is not calculated to further the interests of the town ; and while we disclaim having any right or desire whatever to dictate to said Building Committee, who are abundantly competent, we think, to manage their own affairs, we also feel it a duty which we owe ourselves to state so distinctly as to make misconception impossible, that it was no part of our intention to advise the erection of a new building which should not contain three spacious school-rooms, the least eligible of which should be far superior in every particular to the one now occupied by Miss Nash. We moreover regard our Report as clear and definitive, leaving no discretion with the Building Committee with regard to the general plan of the house, but only as regards recitation rooms, closets, &c &c Howland Holmes Sidney G.
