HomeMy WebLinkAbout2338 Report of committee on naming the public schools, October 29, 1858Lexington, Oct 29th 1858
Names of Schools.
The Committee to whom was referred the subject
of naming the public schools in this town have
given the matter due consideration, and
they now submit the follow
Report.
The Committee are of opinion, that, instead
of designating our schools by the points of
compass, as we now do, it would be more convenient,
more in keeping with the usages in
other towns, and more in conformity with
the spirit of the age, to give each a distinct
name; - using for the purpose such names only
as are held in revered remembrance - some
for their intimate appreciation with our free institutions,
of which our free schools are the most
precious gem. The Committee have therefore
designated the North as the "Bowditch"
the West as the "Warren"
the South or Kite End as "Franklin"
the S. East or East Village, as "Adams"
the Centre School as "Hancock"
All which is respectfully submitted by
