II1. SIP Goals and updates for 2018-2019
a. School Climate Committee
i. Principal discussed the receipt of the LEF School Community Grant this year to work on
school climate. This came out of the discipline disparity data discussion last year and the
district's focus on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion this year. Clarke is working with
Jeffrey Benson, an author and consultant to many schools with regard to discipline,
school climate and the policies and routines that support both. A Climate Committee
has been established made up of about 15 Clarke teachers who are meeting with Mr.
Benson monthly to do this work. They have established the working theory that creating
a school climate where all students feel safe, respected and welcomed will reduce
behavior referrals. This will be done through creating and implementing systems and
routines school wide. This work is ongoing. The next steps will be to look at the
Pandora survey data around school climate which verifies the need to make some
changes.
b. Pandora Survey results
i. Principal walked the site council through the Pandora results online. The online interface
is easy to use and visually appealing. We looked at the results in the areas of "Sense of
Belonging" and "Diverse and Equitable Actions", noting that not all students feel they
are connected to adults in the building and that the students who responded favorably to
these questions are generally doing well academically and do not have behavior
referrals.
ii. Parent brought up the idea of the dot exercise which is to have staff put a dot next to any
student in the building with whom they have had a recent and meaningful connection to
or interaction. The visual impact of this exercise is powerful. Members discussed how
this could be done with such a large student population - maybe by team but we would
want the input of exploratory teachers as well.
IV. Questions, comments, concerns and other topics not specified
