Re: April 8 Meeting
LHS School Site Council Meeting met on Monday April 8, 2019 from 5:45-7:15 PM in Room 505D in the
World Language Building.
Present: Andrew Stephens, Suzanne Lau, Bryce Spalding, Ed Li, Cathy Swan, Nancy Shepard, Angela
Chang, Khoi Le, Erin Barrett, Shiv Chandra, Katelyn Riley, Katie Cutler, Leslie Zales and Sheera Knecht.
Absent: Liz Curtin and Kate Vogelzang.
Guests: Marie -Tristan Rago, Karen Griffiths and Christina Lin (Parents).
I. Approved the March 2019 meeting minutes
II. Announcements/updates/discussion
• Budget/FTE
o Budget includes additional Full Time Staff (FTE's) for LHS to cover anticipated enrollment
increase for this year and some from last year.
o There is also an additional counselor and 0.2 music position.
o Course verification with students will be completed in April and then teacher assignments
will be made.
• MCAS
o Congratulations to Andy Baker and Donna Sintiris for the first online MCAS running as well
as could be expected.
o Trial runs before the actual MCAS days identified problem areas to address.
o Other grades were asked to minimize technology use during MCAS.
o Controversial question on the MCAS was highlighted in the Boston Globe and included a
quote from a Lexington student as well as the author of the quoted book.
• Space Mining Update for 2019-2020
o Science labs being re -arranged to add another Biology lab.
o Identified spaces that can be converted to 4 additional classrooms: one in the Science modular
classrooms, one in the freshmen modular classrooms, and two IT spaces (these will not be
ready until late 2019).
o This should be enough classrooms for 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 according to current
projections.
9 New schedule logistics & communication
o New LHS calendar google doc with 6 -day rotating schedule shared with staff.
III. Review/updates on 2018-2019 School Improvement Plan items
• 1.3 Work with system to review/refine system wide District Curriculum Accommodation Plan
o Deans have done research to look at DCAP plans in other districts.
o They then compared Lexington DCAP plan for the different categories of accommodations to
these plans and presented to staff for feedback.
o Will be preparing an updated model plan to leadership in May with a plan to implement in
September, pending approval by the district.
o Current DCAP plan needs improvement.
• 3.4 Continue to explore ways to bring students and teachers together.
o There are systemic "walls" in the school.
o Exploring an Advisory approach in homeroom — to have a consistent adult meeting with a
consistent group of students on a regular basis to build relationships.
o Moving the date of the pep -rally from the day before Thanksgiving to October 2019, during
the school day in the gym to encourage more enthusiastic participation. Can still only
accommodate a single class at a time.
o Explore ways to coordinate activities by Class Councils, clubs and other student groups to
create more momentum and share ideas.
IV: Discussion: Proposed 2019-2020 School Improvement Plan review & discussion
• Divided into 4 rotating groups to examine each Goal in the SIP and provide feedback on goals that
need to be continued and propose new goals for the SIP next year.
• Principal Stephens will use this feedback and feedback from other stakeholders to prepare a draft of
the SIP 2019-2020 to review at the next meeting.
