Re: February 11 Meeting
LHS School Site Council Meeting met on Monday February 11, 2019 from 6:15-7:45 PM in Room 505D in
the World Language Building.
Present: Andrew Stephens, Suzanne Lau, Shiv Chandra, Kate Vogelzang, Bryce Spalding, Katie Cutler,
Leslie Zales, Ed Li, Cathy Swan, Nancy Shepard, Angela Chang, Katelyn Riley, Khoi Le and Sheera Knecht.
Absent: Liz Curtin and Erin Barrett.
Guests: Jenn Judkins (LPS IT director) and Andy Baker (Associate Principal).
1. Approved January 2019 meeting minutes.
II. Guest: Jenn Judkins — LPS IT director
• Discussion of vision for technology (1:1 computer) integration
o In September, freshmen and seniors will receive Chromebooks, so that all students at LHS
will have a device.
o Identify targeted areas for professional development. Increase shared information between
staff on what works and what does not.
o What are baseline expectations for use in the classroom?
■ Using Google Classroom as a digital environment.
■ Expand ways that students demonstrate learning.
■ Master calendar
o What instruction is there for students to gain foundational skills? This is currently done in
class or being acquired in elementary or middle schools.
o What is the impact of Chromebooks at home?
o How can parents/students give feedback? What mechanisms (email, survey, Lexington
Listens...).
o Rising seniors —Could they be given a choice?
■ Many already have devices. Could the Chromebook be optional?
o Student/family education
■ Non-academic use
■ Parent utilization sessions — information on what to expect, how to control home use?
■ Have an open channel for concerns/questions and advertise it.
■ Survey parents — Are you interested in informational sessions on... ? What
topics/education would help?
o Chromebooks provide for equity for all students.
■ Estimate that 20-30% students work better on personal devices, whereas 20-30%
students use devices provided from carts.
■ Lower level internet usage like Google Docs could be done on personal devices.
■ Chromebooks provide a secure/locked environment for conducting online tests.
• Discussion of website
o Definitely needs updating in structure, content and vocabulary.
o Logo and branding needs to be consistent.
o Switching to a WordPress backbone with a new vendor (current vendor is proprietary) .
o Expect to have a district page and pages for individual schools. Some customization
anticipated for individual school character and needs. Consistency of architecture by school
levels — elementary, middle schools and high school.
■ LHS would have a department focus for information.
■ Teachers websites would be linked to (unless hosted by old vendor) .
■ Prominent location for new LHS schedule
o Searchability and master calendar with details of events are important features.
o Simplify websites to make navigation easier and information more accessible.
o Edit website architecture in technology department, with schools limited to adding and
refreshing content.
o Use analytics (heat map) to identify sites visited most often and improve website layout.
o Internal Google site for staff functions.
o Repository for forms (e.g. community service, attendance appeals, transcript requests, etc.)
o Intuitive language and icons for navigation.
o Add details to calendar events.
• Utilization of online communication tools for classwork/homework
III. Announcements/updates
• Graffiti incidents &long-range thinking
o Is there an increase in the number of incidents oris there an increase in the frequency of
reporting?
o Latest incident at an away basketball game being investigated.
o Is the additional attention to graffiti incidents encouraging further graffiti? What is the
balance?
o Administration increasing efforts to encourage positive messages of diversity (bulletin board
with sticky notes).
