Wednesday, February 6, 2019
MINUTES
Members Present: Amy Burk, Steve Chang, Christina Gavin, Amy Klotz, and Rick Rogers
Approval of January 16, 2019 Minutes: On a motion by Amy Klotz, seconded by Steve
Chang, the minutes of January 16, 2019 were unanimously approved.
Updates
Principal Search Process: Rick reported on the school visits by the two finalists on
Tuesday. The Superintendent is expected to make a final decision prior to February
break.
Gr. 4 NAEP & ACCESS Testing: NAEP testing for about 60 fourth grade students
took place today and went smoothly. Thanks to Christina Gavin for all the advanced
preparation and coordinating NAEP while also overseeing the completion of ACCESS
testing for 100 ELL students.
Recent Incident: Rick reported on a safety incident last week during arrival on the
third floor. Staff responded quickly and no one was hurt. Fifth grade parents (and
one adjacent fourth grade class) were informed of the incident. Appropriate follow-
up steps have been put in place to provide support and ensure student safety.
School Improvement Plan Updates
Please refer to School Improvement Plan Social Emotional Goal Update (dated January 16,
2019) for details.
Goal 2 (Social Emotional) Update (continued)
Mental Health: Rick described how in addition to using data teams to identify
students who may benefit from counseling support, a Mental Health team member
is attending grade level CPT monthly. An area we still need to work on is
identifying exit criteria for students who receive TLP Tier 2 support.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: This was discussed last meeting, but since that time
we had a faculty meeting (2/4) in which Christina Gavin presented data on office
referrals broken down by gender, race, IEP status and ELL. The data was used to
continue our conversation about ways to reduce referrals for boys who are Black or
African-American. COSEBOC Consultant Pat Kelly will spend a half-day at
Estabrook on 2/7 to observe and assess our climate and make recommendations
Home-School Communication Strategies: We still need to do work on reviewing the
content of our classroom newsletters to determine if they are providing parents
with the information they need (given that homework is not assigned). Estabrook
Buzz is now published weekly. Rick would like to work with PTO to consider
merging newsletters and send PTO communication to all Estabrook families, not just
PTO members.
Goal 3 (Safety) Update
Safe Routes to School was begun to reduce traffic at school. This year it has been
more focused on promoting healthy habits each month as a way to bring more
1
visibility to the program.
Traffic management: Our new crossing guard at the school entrance sends Rick and
Christina updates so we can send reminders out to parents. Steve talked about the
challenge of being sent away from the driveway 3-4 times and then having to turn
around when there are snow banks.
Safety Procedure & ALICE Training: Christina is representing Estabrook on a
district-wide committee working to clarify expectations for annual drills and
training.
Supporting New Principal’s Transition
We had a preliminary conversation about how best to support the transition to a new
principal. Among the ideas that were brainstormed:
New Principal should meet with as many populations as possible and schedule
opportunities to meet parents early.
Provide an overview of the year and all the events on the calendar
Provide an overview of committees and standing meetings
Help the new principal with context – where we have come from and where we
need to go (What’s needs to be fixed and what’s next.)
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion – Maintain momentum & identify next steps
Be mindful school will have 4th principal in 4 years
Write a School Improvement Plan that identifies key priorities, rather than an
exhaustive list of everything going on. Include a visionary component
Add student leadership goal
Is it time to update vision for school (with new principal)?
