4. Hastings data collection for discipline discrepancy
a. Members of the Human Rights Committee and the Commission on Disability
of Lexington looked at discipline data that is reported to the state. This data
was focused around suspensions and expulsions. The data showed a
noticeable discrepancy amongst minorities and students with disabilities.
b. Administrators in the district created a Call for Action, which had action steps
to address the disparity. Assistant Principals looked at the reason behind why
students are receiving this consequence and what are the steps of the
process.
c. At Hastings, we are collecting data on Major and Minor write-up forms. Our
data ranges from being disrespectful to an adult, to having a verbal argument
with a peer, to ignoring an adult direction. The majority of write-ups happen
during unstructured times when there are lots of kids in one space with
fewer adults.
d. Anne Knight is meeting with the SSP staff and reviewing this data to help
inform and plan for the future on other ways to respond and promote
positive reinforcement.
e. Many students who are written up are on an IEP. As the curriculum becomes
more difficult, these students interact with more adults, and become
increasingly frustrated with how "easy" the curriculum seems to be to their
peers, which can result in acting out behavior.
f. Hastings is one of the only schools that are tracking minor forms, in addition
to major forms.
5. Strategic planning for District
a. Julie Hackett has launched a strategic planning process with a joint council
(administrators in the district). The group has gotten together to meet twice
to think about things we want to keep in our professional practice, things we
want to leave, and dreams we have for the district. Maureen Kavanaugh will
crunch this data to create a summary of what was brought up.
6. Information from Sarah Davison regarding a community project she is doing for
grades K-2 to promote conversations around race and ethnicity.
b. Sarah Davison is a first grade teacher in the building who is in the
administrative program at the EDCO Collaborative. Sarah's main project is to
create book bags for family K-2, which contains books, discussion questions,
and projects around race and ethnicity.
