It will be held in the Bridge conference room or Library on a school day between 8:15-8:45 am. Agenda: 1. ELA Pilot Overview Potential Future Topics for Meetings • School Innovation Plan 2024-2026 Review (updated March 2025) Meeting Notes: • ELA Pilot o Curriculum Review happens every 2-4 years o Piloting 3 Programs: ■ EL Education ■ Arts & Letters • Same curriculum developer as Fundations ■ Newly Published Units of Study (Reading & Writing) o Questions: How does the rest of the process work? ■ Parent Night Information - Pilot families only o Information from Superintendents: ■ K-5 Literacy Working Group (4.D): The curriculum review process is both underway and under review! We are exploring a new curriculum review process (see priority 4.D). Consistent with our LPS Strategic Plan, this new process will consider ways to engage community experts more thoughtfully in the review. ■ We have established a K-5 Literacy Working Group (see priority 4.C) as part of the curriculum review process. In Lexington, all students receive 30 minutes of phonics instruction daily, a practice that has been in place for the past four years. Components of our core literacy block include systematic instruction in foundational skills and engaging with complex texts and writing. Watch this two -minute video to learn how Lexington has been delivering foundational literacy skills to K-3 students. Additionally, we are involved in a 30 -week pilot of three curricula across 18 elementary classrooms throughout the district. The curricula under consideration are Arts and Letters, EL, and the Revised Units of Study. ■ Pilot Site Visits: 108 pilot classroom site visits have been scheduled! This will enable our Steering Committee to gain a comprehensive understanding of each program. It will also allow for 216 educators who are not included in the pilot to visit pilot classrooms and provide feedback on program elements and student engagement. ■ Professional Learning: Our coaches and some pilot teachers at Bowman, Hastings, and Harrington were visited by Daniel Velasco, our Arts & Letters Implementation Specialist. We all appreciated the time together to visit classrooms and learn more about how we can differentiate instruction to meet our students' needs and utilize the curriculum with teacher decision-making at the forefront. ■ Pilot Family Event: The first Pilot Family Event is scheduled for October 15, 2025, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. Grades 1-2 Families will be invited from 7:00-7:30 p.m., and Grades 3-5 Families will be invited from 7:30-8:00 p.m.. Pilot teachers and coaches will participate in these sessions for Q&A with the families of pilot students. Daniel Velasco from Arts & Letters may also attend this session. o Back to School Night: ■ SBC Parent Feedback - • There was a lot of good information - is there a way to have a combination of student/family night • Challenge of having multiple children • Important to have a moment with parents only because there is information for just them • Can be challenging to manage the child care when there's a parent traveling, etc. ■ SBC Teacher Feedback - • Parent attendance dropping over the years • Parents seem most interested in seeing the classroom • 9:00 am seems like the time that parents are most likely to attend o Update the community about what SBC is Notes Summary: We heard an update on the literacy pilot which is taking place across the entire district and in two classrooms at Bridge. There are many goals of the pilot but primarily the district is looking for a program that best meets the instructional needs of all of our students. We are excited to be taking part in this pilot. We discussed Back to School/Curriculum Night and options for updating the structure of the night. As it stands Curriculum Night has been the same for many years. The six elementary schools have heard feedback from staff and families. SBC discussed different concerns including, but not limited to, the timing of the night and childcare needs, a parent night vs. an event at which children can share their classroom and work, and the timing of the event (morning vs. evening). There was a short discussion about the school directory that is accessible through the MembershipToolkit when parents sign up to join the PTA. Parents have expressed frustration that the class lists in MembershipToolkit are incomplete and that can make community connection challenging. Additionally, access to the directory is only possible through subscription. SBC and the PTA will discuss potential alternatives for community connection.
