HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-12-08-SC-min Lexington School Committee Minutes - December 8, 1987 Page 1 A meeting of the Lexington School Committee was held on Tuesday, December 8, 1587 at 8:00 p.m. in the Lexington High School Student Library. Present were Wik, Koplow, Newman, Clough and Student Repre- m, sentative Johanson. Also present were Zimmerman, Bent, Macinnes, DiGiammarino and Barnes. Mrs. Leader arrived at 9: 00 p.m. Karen Docks announced that the Lexington PTA Council had received PUBLIC a recognition award for Parent/Teacher Association Leadership. She PARTICIPATION presented the School Committee with the award. Mr. Clough, on behalf of the School Committee members commended the PTA's and the PTA • Council for its leadership. Bill Ashmanskas, Lexington High School senior, expressed concern regarding the Waring dismissal vote by the Lexington School Committee. He encouraged them to reconsider their action. Mr. Maclnnes presented a status report on renovations in the STATUS OF schools. RENOVATIONS Mr. Bent, Interim Assistant Superintendent of Schools for instru - MIDDLE SCHOOL tion, presented an overview of a proposal for a possible exchange EXCHANGE WITH program with Barcelona, Spain. The program would link Lexington BARCELONA, SPAIN students (Clarke Middle School) with their Spanish counterparts. He noted that the plan would be for a 2 - 2 1/2 week exchange between the two schools. He added that Lexington was now in its fourth year of exchanges with Barcelona and felt that expanding the program to Clarke Middle School would be advantageous. Definite plans would be an- nounced in the next several weeks and he agreed to keep the School . Committee informed. Some members of the School Committee expressed concern regarding the selection of students for program participation. They emphasized that the criteria should be objective and suggested a fair method of selection such as conducting a lottery. Student Repre- sentative Johanson applauded the effort of the Middle School exchange. Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, it was VOTED: to ratify the memorandum of agreement between the Lexington LEA/SCHOOL Education Association and the Lexington School Committee for COMMITTEE CONTRACT the school years 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90. (Wik, Newman, Unanimous) Mr. Clough complimented the negotiating team of Miller, Barnes and the School Committee subcommittee members Wik and Newman for reaching a settlement. Mrs. Wik said she wished to extend her compliments to Dr. Zimmerman for her outstanding leadership also during the period of a work slow- down, strike and her other activities during the last several weeks. Mr. Newman said that he agreed with Mrs. Wik's remarks and felt that in the long run, the School System would be better off as a re- sult of the recent experience and the new contract resolution. r Lexington School Committee Minutes - December 8, 1987 Page 2 Mrs. Koplow extended accolades to Dr. Zimmerman for her leadership during contract negotiations and expressed the hope that the strong support from the community for the teachers would continue with their involvement in the schools and the school system's financial situa- tion. Mrs. Leader also complimented Dr. Zimmerman noting that she had handled the difficult weeks with great aplomb and had performed remarkably well. SABBATICAL) Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, it was VOTED: to accept the Transition Program proposal and letter of intent ESL GRANT for the fiscal years 1989, 1990 and 1991 under the Transition- al Bilingual Education Program - Chapter 71A, Acts of 1971 for the Lexington Public Schools as noted on Page 55. (Newman, Wik, Unanimous) (To be embodied in the Official Minutes. ) It was VOTED: to convene in Executive Session at 9:16 p.m. to discuss mat- ters pertaining to negotiations: Yes, Newman; Yes, Leader; Yes, Kot ow; Yes, Wik; Yes, Clough.
