HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-11-02-SC-min Lexington School Committee Minutes - November 2, 1987 Pace 1 A meeting of the Lexington School Committee was held on Tuesday, November 2, 1987 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lexington High School Student Library. Present were Erik, Newman, Koplow and Clough. Also present Zimmerman and Barnes. The Chairman called the meeting to order at approximately 7:30 p.m. It was VOTED: to convene in Executive Session at 7:31 p.m. to discuss mat- EXECUTIVE SESSION ters pertaining to litigation and decision on a grievance. Yes, Wik; Yes, Newman; Yes, Koplow; Yes, Clough. The Chairman announced that the School Committee would be return- ing to Public Session At approximately 8:00 p.m. The School Committee returned to Public 7ccc. 7. at 7:56 p.m, Praca^.t were: Koplow, Leader, Newman, Wik, Clough and Student Representative Christi Johanson. Also present were: Zimmerman, Bent, Macinnes, DiGiammarino and Barnes. Christine Myers, Lexington High School senior, expressed concern PUBLIC PARTICIPA- about User Fees for student parking at the High School. The School TION Committee thanked Ms. Myers for her -comments and stated that Dr. Zimmerman and the principal of the High School would be in contact with her regardingclarity of the charges. Wendy Thompson, Cable Programs, presented an example of the LHS NEWS EXCHANGE Lexington High School student news exchange telecast. The Committee thanked Mrs. Thompson for the excellent presentation. Mrs. Wik presented the School Committee with a suggested plan for SUPERINTENDENT the composition of the interview advisory committee. She noted that SEARCH Dr. Platte, consultant for the search, was pleased with the makeup of '.. the Committee. She stated the deadline for volunteers vias December i, 1987 and people should contact her or Mr. Barnes. Composition of the Committee was agreed to as follows: 1 principal, 1 department head/ coordinator, 2 students (high school upper class, 1 male, 1 female) , E citizens (3 mist have children currently enrolled in the Lexington schools) , 3 professional staff (high school, middle school, elemen- tary) , 3 classified staff. Mrs. Wik said that volunteers would be sought via notices in the Minute-man, memoranda to town offices, I!, school staff, etc. It was VOTED: to accept the Minutes of May 19, 1387 as corrected. Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, it was VOTED: to accept the Schedule of Payments as listed on Pages 45 and SCHEDULE OF 45A. The School Committee discussed some concerns regarding 'changes in the High School plans for the improvement of the fa yThe School Committee thanked Mr. Macinnes and Mrs. r iiia for the report. A discussion took place regarding Budget Guidelines for the 88-8 BUDGETGUIDELINES _ 9 � ,,�ti__ school budget. Conversation centered around realistic guidelines versus philosophical guidelines. After review, it was agreed to accept the g" ,=e1 'nes as presented with the deletion of the words "where possible" in guideline :1,7. '4. Dr. Zimmerman noted that her interpretation was that three budgets would need to be constructed: one that would live within the 6% guideline of the Town; one that would live within the 2 1/2 guideline and one that would indicate what their schools really needed. It was agreed to discuss this matter at a future meeting. The enrollment report was deferred. ENROLLMENT REPORT Upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, it was VOTED: to accept the Personnel Changes - Certified as listed on Page PERSONNEL CHANGES- 46. Steinert rt -ID-PIAN Sons in the amount of $25,200 as being in the best interests to the Lexington Public Schools. (Newman, Koplow, Unanimous) Mr. Clough stated he had been in contact with the assistant mod- STUDENT/FACULTY erator of the Student/Faculty Senate regarding the process for over- HOUSE OVERRIDE riding the veto of the principal as it related to study halls and VETO where the study halls would be conducted.
