HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-05-26-SC-min (1) Lexington School Committee Minutes - May 26, 1987 Page 1 A meeting of the Lexington School Committee was held on Tuesday, May 26, 1987 at 8:00 p.m. in the Bridge School cafeteria. Present were Koplow, Leader, Wik and Clough. Also present were Pierson, DiGiammarino and Barnes. Dr. Pierson began the presentation by review the capacity of the BRIDGE SCHOOL elementary schools where no redistricting would take place. He also REDISTRICTING reviewed the School Committee vote on redistricting of early May. The hearing at this point highlighted the alternative=_ regarding redistricting within the Bridge School district. Dr. Pierson noted that it was important to say which plan seemed to have the most merit and support for the long term picture for the system. After the pre- sentation, the Superintendent and several parents made presentations regarding possible redistricting options, enrollment patterns and issues such as the "grandfathering students," etc. Following the remarks of parents and citizens, the School Commit- tee discussed the redistricting issues. (Examples: geococes, "grand- fathering" , fifth grade assignments, projections, redistricting effect on other districts and goals of the system. ) Dr. Pierson noted that he was recommending LM, LR, LG be redis- tricted. He said there was a need to maintain Bridge's enrollment at a relatively low level in order to absorb future students from new housing in the western part of the Town and/or students from Estabrook. He said this plan was the only one which achieved those goals. It was VOTED: to accept the redistricting recommendation of the Superin- tendent of Schools as presented. (Koplow, Wik, Unanimous) At this point Mr. Clough reminded the audience of Mr. Newman's position which was not in support of the redistricting plan. it was VOTED: to convene in Executive Session at 10:15 p.m. to discuss mat- EXECUTIVE SESSION ters pertaining to potential litigation and contract negotia- VOTE tions. Yes, Koplow; Yes, Wik; Yes, Leader; Yes, Clough. The Chairman announced that the School Committee would be return- ing to Public Session. It was VOTED: to reconvene in Public Session at 11:25 P.M.
