FOR CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATEATESS
ITotice is hereby given that at an adjourned meeting of
the Historic Districts Commission held on ',Vednesday, PTovem-
ber 19, 1969, the Commission voted to disapprove the applica-
tion of Shell Oil Company for a. Certificate of Appropriateness
for the maintenance of a soft drink dispenser on the service
station premises at Bedford Street and 'Iorthen Road, .,which is
within the Battle Green District .
The application for a Certificate of Appropriateness has
been disapproved for the reason that the ovmer of the dis-
penser has removed the property from an exterior location on
the premises .

This certificate is issued pursuant to Cbapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to

withrespectto alterations to the service station building, as noted
below, at Bedford Street and FVorthen Road, which isawithin the Battle
Greer. District .
The alterations consist of the replacement. of the two existing open
walled storage enclosures at,the southwesterly and southeasterly
rear corners of the building ,with new roofed storage enclosures .
The location of the vertical walls of the new enclosures are to be
as shown on drawing . c. D-69356-1 entitled "Storage Addition to
4 Bay Colonial Design Building Bedford £ VIorthen Lexington Mass ." ,
as reviscd. September . 3, 1969, submitted to the Commission on
October 29, 1969 With the foilowing modification: the easterly
and westerly vertical walls " of the new enclosures arc to be ro-
cessed a_,proxinately Lid from the vertical plan, of the resnectiva
walls of the existing walls of the main building to which the-I ara
attached. The design, layout, style, dimensions and building
materials, except as otherwise specified herein, appear on or niay be
scaled from the aforesaid dra:•fing. 1,.11 new brick is to be of type
and color to match as nearly as possible the bricl� of the existing
building. All new downspouts are to be copper . All new °roodwork
and the new steel doors and frames are to be painted white to hitch
the existing uoodwork and doors . All exposed vent pipes aro to be
painted red or T;✓hi.to as necessary to match the brickwork or w:Tood.-

This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to
Shell Oil Company

withrespectto the maintenance of the existing ice dispenser on the
service station premises, as noted 'oelo+v, at Bedford Street and
Vlorthen Road, which is within the Battle Green District .
The existing ice dispenser ( photographs of which appear in the files
of the Commission) may be maintained on the premises subject to the
follom;ing conditions which, if acted upon, "shall be binding upon
the applicant, the caner of the property and his successors in title'°
within the meaning of Section 9 of Chapter !}L;.7, Acts of 1956, as
a- end ad:
1. The dispenser shall be. ,_oved from its present
location and co-tered in front of and close to
the rauntin v:ind-ow bet,:�reen the northeasterly
corner of the building and the rest room door-
way of the easterly elevation.
. All vertical sarfaces of the dispenser, including
the existing glass or plastic passel, are to be
finished in a shade of red to hatch the br'ie'z;iorh
of the building.
