The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on t,,ednesday,
July 9, 1969, at 7:30 P.ivl., in the Selectmen ' s Room, Tov--n Office Building,
Lexington. Members present were Commissioners '71111bur M. Jaquith, Chair-
man, Philip B . Parsons, Secretary, Ruth G. Bevan, George E. Graves and
,flax H. Straw and associate Commissioners George ':i. Emery and Franklin C .
Hudson.
Hearing was held at 7:30 P.P+% on the application of Martin V . and
Jeanne Fowler Sussman for a Certificate of 11_ppropriateness wit'r, respect
to charges in the exterior features of the dwelling at 1361 I+lassachu-
setts Avenue, which is within the Munroe Tavern District. The Chairman
read the notice of hearing and the letter of application. Mr. and Mrs.
Sussman appeared and presented to the Commission photographs of the ele-
vations of the dwelling involved in the changes with superimposed draw-
ings of the new windows . No other persons having appeared, the hearing
was closed at 8:00 P.M. after discussion, upon motion duly made and
seconded, it was unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate to the applicant .
__earing was held at 8:05 P.H. on the application of `Tillage :artisans,
Inc . for a Certificate of Appropriateness with -respect to the erection
and display of signs , a change in exterior architectural features and the
erection of fencing for the store at 25 Depot Square, which is within the
Battle Greer_ District. The Chairman read the notice of hearing and the
letter of application. Mrs . Chelly Baron, President, Mrs . Kimball Seeping,
and -ttorney for the firm Robert Kates appeared. Mrs . Baron presented
photographs of the front and rear of the store, scale drawings of the pro-
posed signs and a sketch of the proposed changes in the rear of the store .
No other persons having appeared, the hearing was closed at 8.55 P.IrI.
After discussion, upon motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously
NOTED to issue two Certificates to the applicant. The first permitted the
erection and display of two signs for the store and the second permitted
changes in the exterior architectural features of the rear elevation of the
building and the erection of fencing in the rear of the store .
Hearing was held at 9 :00 P.M. on the application of Ellwood C . Bar-
rett d/b/a Barrett Press for a Certificate of appropriateness with respect
to changes in the exterior architectural features of the building at 5 Yal-
lis Court, which is within the Battle Green District. Mr. Barrett, a
Mrs . Nary Kelly and C . Bix Shoemaker appeared and the applicant and 11r.
Shoemaker presented a brochure picturing the type of aluminum blinds to be
installed. No other persons having appeared the hearing was closed at
9:30 P.M. After discussion, upon motion duly made and seconded, it was
unanimously VOTED to issue a Certificate to the applicant®
The Chairman presented a bill from Clerk E. Flynn in the amount of
176.70. upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOTED to process the
bill for payment.
Discussion was held on the erection of a sign, without the issuance
of a Certificate of =,,ppropriateness, on the store at 1711 Massachusetts
.venue . The Chairman will send a letter to the occupant of the store to
advise him that the sign is in violation of the Historic Districts Act .

Discussion was also held on the taxicab signs which have replaced
the signs of Rowe Chevrolet, Inc . and the Depositors Trust Company. The
latter signs were to be removed by June 30, 1969 and the carrying units by
July 15, 1969 . The Commission members agreed to wait until the final date
before contacting the Lexington Cab Co . , Inc.
Several Commission members and Chairman. Jaquith are to meet on July 10,
1969 with Mr. Earl Comeau of Associated Estates, Inc. to discuss and vies*
the property at 1632 }Massachusetts Avenue for which a. hearing was held on
May 21, 1969 and for which an extension to August 15, 1969 has been
granted. Due to this meeting on July loth the informal meeting with IT.
Comeau scheduled for July 16, 1969 has been cancelled.
New applications from Arthur F. Douglass and John B . Douglass, Trus-
tees of Almarjo Trust for a hearing with respect to the erection and display
of a sign on and changes in the exterior architectural features of the
building at 1844 Massachusetts Avenue and from Gray G. and Larue Howell
Henry with respect to changes in the exterior architectural features of
the dwelling at 11 Hancock Street have been scheduled for August 6, 1969 .
The next meeting night is scheduled. for Wednesday, July 23, 1969, at
7:30 P.M., in the Selectmen ' s Room, Town Office Building to consider the
applications of Shell Oil Company, Lexington Federal Savings and Loan
Association and Julius and Marcella A. King.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:20 A.M.

This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to
Martin V . and Jeanne Fowler Sussman
withrespectto changes in the exterior architectural features of the
dwelling, as noted below, at 1361 Massachusetts Avenue, which is M
within the Munroe Tavern District .
All the existing double hung windows containing 2 over 2 lights of
the' first and second floors on the southerly, easterly and northerly
elevations, except for the windows of the bay on the southerly eleva-
tion, are to be replaced with double hung windows having 12 over 12
lights . The existing oval window on the southerly elevation is to be
replaced with a double hung window having 12 over 12 lights matching
as nearly as possible the aforesaid new windows . All new windows are
to have wood muntins .

The changes consist of the following :
1 . Covering the existing wood clapboards with aluminum
clapboard siding having 4" exposure
2 . Covering the existing wood cornerboards and all
soffits of the overhanging gables and roofs with
aluminum sheeting
, 3 . Replacing the existing gutters and downspouts
with alumina- gutters and downspouts
4 . Installation of combination windows, narrow framing,
on all windows
5. Removal of all existing blinds on the front and
two side elevations and installing for all windows
of these elevations aluminum louvered blinds
matching in width as nearly as possible the existing
wood blinds .
All new aluminum installations under Paragraphs 1 to 4, inclusive,
are to be finished in white baked enamel. The new blinds ( Para-
graph 5) are to be finished in a baked enamel Taunroe Tavern red .

CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to
Village Artisans, Inc .
withrespectto the erection and display of two signs for the store, as
noted below, at 25 Depot Square, which is within the Battle Green
District .
The first sign is to be painted on the existing plywood facia above
the windows and doors of the front elevation of the store and is to
bear the legend: "Handcrafts Village Artisans Antiques" . The let-
ters of the sign are to be black and the plywood facia is to be white .
The design, layout, styles and sizes of the lettering are to be as 9
shown on the scale drawing by Urso Signs of '01altham submitted to the
Commission at the hearing on July 9, 1969 . The width of the decora-
tive lines enclosing the words "Handcrafts" and "Antiques" shall con-
form to the scale as shown on the aforesaid drawing. The sign may be
illuminated by the existing two light fixtures hung from the roof
cornice .
The second sign is to be located above the windows and the entrance
doorway of the rear elevation of the building facing Meriam Street .
The sign is to consist of the legend: "Handcrafts Village Artisans
Gifts" painted in black letters on a white wood backboard which is
to be centered on the entrance doorway. The backboard shall be not
more than 121 in length and 11 in height and shall have a molding
approximately 4v in width. The design, layout, styles and sizes of
the lettering are to be as shown on the aforesaid scale drawing
except that the decorative lines above and below the words "Hand-
crafts" and "Gifts" are to be omitted.

1. A canvas awning approximately 42" in width having
black and white stripes is to be erected above the
entrance door of the building
2 . Flower boxes painted black are to be hang with in-
visible suspension beneath the two windows . The
length of each flower box is to approximate the
width of the window casing below vrnich it is hung
3° A light fixture for the entrance door may be installed
provided that the location, style and size of the
fixture is submitted to and approved by the Commission
prior to installation
4 . The entrance door is to be painted black and the sash
of the two windows is to be painted black.
4 white picket fence approximately 24" in height may be installed
adjoining the rear elevation of the store provided that a Plot Plan
showing the location of the fence in relation to the building and
the property line is submitted to and approved by the 0ommission
prior to installation.
