The Historic Districts CommIssion, held a meeting on WeRdnesday,
May 210 196 m at 7:30 Pom,o in the selectmen's Room,a o Office Buil-
ding, Lexington. Members present were Commissioners Wilbur M, Jaquith,.
Chairman, Ruth Ci. Bevan, George E. Graves and Max H, Straw and Asso-
ciate Commissioners George W. ,z1mery, Franklin C . kdI2dson and S. 1aa"d3'Z`enceg
"-nipple. Due to the absence of Secretary Philip B. Parsons, upon
motion duly made and seconded, It was unanimously VOTED that Commis-
sioner Ruth 2. 3eavan serve as Secretary Pro Taaaapore.

Chairman read the notice of hearing and the letter of application.
Eleanore F* and Harold Johansen appeared and bars. Johanson presented
photographs of than store and scale drawings of the proposed. sign. Modi-
fications 5n the sign were suggested by Commission members to the sp-
pllesnt. No other persons having appeared, the hearing was closed at
7 :55 P.M. After discussion, upon motion duly made and seconded, it

The supplicant advised the Commission that the plans,, as iareaentedo
were not necessarily firm and that he would be most willing to meet
with the Commission at another time to present finished drawings.

CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS
This certificate is issued pursuant to Chapter 447, Acts of Massachusetts, 1956, as amended, to
Eleanore E. Johansson d/b/a E . J. Realty

withrespectto the erection and display of a sign for the store, as noted
below, at 856 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the East Village
District .
The sign is to consist of three parts painted on the facia boards of
the building as follows : the word "Realtors" to be located on the
facia board above the window fronting on Massachusetts Avenue , the
letters and words "E J Realty" to be located on the facia board above
the corner doorway and multiple listing symbol consisting of a house
elevation and the letters "CMLSM" to be located above the window on
the Independence Avenue elevation. The lettering and the symbol are
to be painted in black on the facia boards which are to be off-white
color. Each part of the sign is to be outlined in black paint by a
border approximately 4" in width.
The design, layout and styles of the lettering and symbol are to be
as shown on the scale drawing by Jack Richardson Signs submitted to
the Commission at the hearing on May 21, 1969 with the following
modifications:
1. The width of the letter "Y" of the word "REALTY"
is to be reduced from its present width to
approximately 11"
2 . The word "REALTY" is to be moved in a right
direction to the extent necessary to result in
the lettering of the sign at each end being equal
distant from the vertical border outline of that
part of the sign
3 . The spacing of the letters "E" and "J" is to
remain the same as on the aforesaid drawing so
that there may be more space between these letters
and the word "REALTY" after this word is moved to
the right as specified in modification 2 .

at 11 Brigham Road, which is within the Hancock-Clarke District.
The fence is to be erected at the rear of the house and connected
thereto at the locations as shown on a drawing entitled "Plot Plan
of Land in Lexington, Mass ." , dated Feb. 16, 1968, by Miller and
Nylander submitted to the Commission at the hearing held on May 21,
1969 .
The fence is to be a cedar fence 6 ' high of 'stockade type and may
be stained a "cedar red" color subject to an approval of the color
on a sample of the fencing by a member of the Cor.,mission prior to
application. 1
