HomeMy WebLinkAbout1969-05-07 HISTORIC DISTRICTS CONUEHISSION MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON MAY 7, 1969 The Historic Districts Commission held a meeting on Wednesday, May 7, 1969, at 7:45 P.m-, in the Selectmen' s Room, Town Office Building, Lexington. Members present were Commissioners Wilbur M. Jaquith, Chairman, Philip B . Parsons, Secretary, Ruth G. Bevan and George E. Graves and Associet e Commissioners George W. Emery and Franklin C . Hudson. Informal meeting was held at 7 45 P.M. with Peter Thomas, Archi- tect with respect to property he has purchased at 19 Muzzey Street . Mr. Thomas presented to the Commission photographs of the existing dwelling, scale drawings of the proposed new building ( after demoli- tion of the existing) and an exterior drawing of the new building. Discussion was held as to the present and future concept of the area, the architecture of the proposed new building and its conformity and compatibility with the neighborhood. Mr. Thomas will forward to the Chairman a Title Report on the property and a history of the present dwelling. The Clerk will notify Mr. Thomas of a date to bring in to the Commission a scale model of the new building. The informal meeting was closed at 9:20 P.M. Harold E. Stevens, Attorney for Shell Oil Company appeared at this time with respect to the installation of air pumps and a refuse disposal container for the Shell Oil service station at 1095 Massa- chusetts Avenue . A letter of application for a hearing for a Certi- ficate will be forwarded at a later date . In response to a question from Commissioner Bevan with respect to ice machines and "coke" machines at service stations the Board of Appeals report on this station does not permit them. A copy of the Board of Appeals report on the Shell service station at the corner of Bedford Street and 'Worthen Road will be obtained for a ruling on these machines . Adjourned hearing was held at 9.45 P.M. on the application of Frederic K. and Marjorie S. Johnson with respect to the erection and display of a dealer name sign for the new retail automobile service station building referred to in Certificate of Appropriateness No. 68 C-27, issued by the Commission on August 8, 1968, at 39 Bedford Street, which is within the Battle Green District . After discussion, upon motion duly made and seconded it was VOTED to issue a Certifi- cate to the applicant . In accordance with an approval condition in Certificate of Appropriateness No. 68 C-27 the Commission at this time approved the installation of the electrical lantern fixture be- tween the lavatory doors of the north elevation of the new retail automobile service station building at 39 Bedford Street, said fix- ture being #5251 on page 6 of lighting fixture brochure entitled EPAtolier Lighting1° . Letter will be sent to Atty. Fred J. Conroy, Agent for the applicants, notifying him of Commission approval. After discussion on paint samples submitted by the applicants, upon motion duly made and seconded, it was VOTED to issue a Certi- Minutes of meeting held on May 7, 1969--Page 2 £icate to Giovanni and Mariantonia Lanza with respect to maintenance of the changes in color of paint on the dwelling and barn at 1994 Massachusetts Avenue, which is within the Battle Green District. The next meeting night is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, 1969, at 7 30 P.M., in the Selectmen ' s Room, Town Office Building to consider the applications of E.J. Realty, Associated Estates, Inc . and James B . and Alma J. Hangste£er. The meeting was adjourned at 11:20 P.M. Philip B. Parsons Secretary Due to the inability of Commissioner Max K• Straw to act on the petition of Giovanni and I4ariantonia Lanza Frederic K. and Marjorie S . The letters of the sign are to be fastened to the stainless steel Tedge bar above the lintel of the service entrance door referred to in Certificate of Appropriateness No. 68 C-31, issued by the Commission on Septem- ber 5, 1968 . The back of the letters are not to set out from the building more than 111 . The style, type, layout and dimensions of the lettering are shown on or may be scaled from drawing No. ER-430-A entitled `Gulf Oil Corpo- ration, Brick Colonial Building Plans Elevations E Sectionst0 , dated 3/24/64, as last revised 7/31/07, submitted to the Commission at the adjourned hearing on "a.v 7, 1969, and drawing ldo . ER-551 entitled "Gulf Oil Corporation, Building Letters Dealer !Tame & Rest Room Signs'' , dated 12/20/62, as last revised 7/12/66, submitted to the Commission at the hearing on July 31, 1968 . The issuance of this Certificate does not constitute evidence of compliance with the Sign By-La1ri or any other By-Law of the Town of Lexington.
