. meeting cf the historic Districts Commission was held
Tuesday evening, Dec. 3, 1957 at 7:30 P.M. in the Selectmen's
Room on the application for a a rtificate of appropriateness
of the Sherwin- `illiams Paint for proposed p lilting and
erection of a sign at 1841 Mass. Ave.Lexington which is
witlin the Battle Green Di, trict. Mr. Parsons presided in
Mr. Davis ' absence. Present also were Commissioners Taylor
and Set ell and lternates Howard and Mrs.Merriam.
Fir. C.S .4ells of 25 Brookline r-ve.Boston was present
frog the Sherwin-Williams people in the absence of Mr.Belcastro
who was at a meeting in Chicago. sir. Wells bad only learned
of this meeting abeul 5 00 o'clock this afternoon.
Mr. Parron:. sad the no`ice and. explained briefly to Mr.We is
the Act.
Mr. Wells Enoke of the high euality of their company end said
they had a 3 and 2 yr. ( 5 yr. total) lease from kr.Scott.
Each, store operates by itself and f,100.O0 is deposited only
o credit of the local company end. Mr. Belcastro is local
manager and responsible for company here.
Mr. eel's said paint could be changed but the sign bothered
them. First sign ees too i for local ordinance and another
one( now up) was ordered which is the r usual sign--cream
background, covering enti ,e top of store with maroon lettering.
Said sign cost $200.00( baked porcelein) and about 50.00 to
erect.
He asked why when the permit fo- sign was given out, why
there was not a note on it saying this Ted been approved
by the Historic Districts Commission?
They knew r_o .ring from the landlord he said about cur
Corm ission.
He would like to have a length of time ( 5 yrs. ) on sign so
that some of the expense could be absorbed. Then sten could
be changed.
Mr.liettell said it visas very hard to have a standard on signs.
It was decided tc discuss this at n( xt week's hearin. ( dec.lOth)
and decide on ano her date with the Sherwin-Williams people ,
when Mr.delc sr .o would be back( which, will be night of Dec.14 )
Mr. Tells wanted this meeting the first of January so h coul.a
be resent as he is ening away Dec.l3th. However, rur.ninr•
this until then is too close tc the 60 day limit.
This hearing d curned about 8:20 P.M. Considerable discussion
was had and it wa. decided to discuss this Dec.lOth and hold
Dec. 17th( Tuesday) for a possible date for this next hearing.
