HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-04-24-SLC-min Town of Lexington Sustainable Lexington Committee Minutes of Meeting of April 24, 2018 A meeting of the Sustainable Lexington Committee (SLC) was held at Cary Hall. A quorum of five was present. Members Present: Mark Sandeen, Marcia Gens, Rick Reibstein, Todd Rhodes Members Absent: Dan Voss Other Attendees: • Charlie Wyman • Joe Pato, Board of Selectmen • Celis Brisbane The meeting was called to order at 7:15 pm. 1. Public Outreach Events (M. Sandeen) 1.1. Discovery Day will be on Saturday (May 26) • We are planning to have the following tables in one area: o Mothers Out Front: focused on Gas Leaks and Taste the Future/ Induction Cooking o Black Earth: focused on Composting (they will have bins) o LexDriveElectric (Mass Energy): plan to have two cars on display o HomeWorks: promoting the Lexington Energy Challenge o Sustainable Lexington: focused on Getting to Net Zero, Community Choice Aggregation, Solar (Hasting School—RFP, canopies), and Quiet Communities. • Attendees: Todd, Dan (possibly), Rick(possibly), Marcia, and Charlie. • Mark will get the permits. 1.2. Bike, Walk and Bus Week(Friday 5/18, 6:30am) • Tables will include: o Mass Energy will table for Drive Green o Composting o Community Choice Aggregation o Attendees: Marcia, Todd 2. Composting (Marcia) Pagel of 3 2.1. Marcia has provided Mark with content to include in the Sustainable Action Plan 3. Solar Update (Mark) 3.1. Mark and Dan are reconstituting the Solar Energy Task Force to prepare an RFP for solar canopies and energy storage at Hasting and Lexington Children's Place. 3.2. DOER is going to declare that rooftop and canopies are different installations — only one can connect to energy storage. Mark is preparing a letter from the town to allow for both to be connected to energy storage. 3.2.1. Committee voted to recommend that the BOS send the letter to DOER. 4. Getting to Net-Zero (Mark) 4.1. National Grid plugged 15 gas leaks, but only 2 were actually fixed. 4.2. Reviewed Getting to Net Zero model for emissions (2016 to 2035). 4.3. Getting to Net-Zero Energy Report will be presented to the BOS in the next few weeks. 4.4. Looking for the BOS to support • Sustainability Action Plan • Sustainable Building Policy • 100% renewable municipal electricity procurement: o Need policy that we prefer the procure 100%renewable electricity and from local sources as possible. o The committee voted to support this policy. • Getting to Net Zero Framework 4.5. Joe will meet with Suzy Barry to get these items on the agenda. 5. Quiet Communities (Rick) 5.1. Quiet Communities is working with Dave Pincineault to develop a plan for Lexington. 5.2. Rick identified that there are four contractors in Massachusetts that meet Quiet Communities requirements. 5.3. Discussed that electric leaf blowers are quieter than gas equipment and reduce emissions, but they still put a lot of particulate in the air—rakes are better. 6. Gas Leaks (Mark) 6.1. Should there be a public meeting on gas leaks? • Maybe in September when the schedule is clearer. It's been 2 years and we've learned a lot, but there's more to do. The method developed may become an industry standard. 7. Toxics (Rick) Page 2 of 3 7.1. The BOH wrote a letter to support the use of the Living Building Red List to guide procurement activities. 7.2.
