Minutes for December 7, 2018 Meeting
December 7, 2018
8:00 a.m. (8:07—8:42)
Location: Room 237 (second floor of mansion)—Lexington Community Center(LCC)
1. Attendance
a. Members: Tanya Gisolfi (Vice Chair), Mona Roy (Clerk), Bonnie
Brodner, James Barry (Police Department), Barbara Hamilton (LPS),
Koren Stembridge (Town), Fuang Ying Huang
b. Liaisons and Guests:: Valerie Overton (LexPride); Mabel Amar,
Pamela Tames, Stanley Yap (CARL), Tony Serio (Human Services),
Aidan Evelyn (Police), Kathleen Lenihan (SC), Brent Maracle
(LICA); Melissa Interess (Human Services)
2. Welcome by Ms. Gisolfi explaining absence of Chair due to illness
3. Public Comments
a. Mabel Amar spoke on Court Watch and Free Them All and
handed out information on the same (see attached)
4. Review October and November Meeting Minutes postponed due to
absence of Chair

6. Workgroup Updates
a. MLK update given by Ms. Roy and Ms. Gisolfi— Planning is ongoing,
panelists are mostly finalized, Ms. Gisolfi may be third LHRC member
in place of Barbara Hamilton. Action Item: Ms. Gisolfi will follow up
re: LHS students participation for community service hours and make
spreadsheet for sign in. Action Item: Ms. Roy and Ms. Gisolfi will
publicize and update LHRC website with appropriate background
materials.
b. Website (Ms. Roy and Ms. Huang)— working on desired content, will
follow up with Town Manager's office for next steps. Action Item:
Ms. Roy and Ms. Huang will come up with a list of appropriate links
on LHRC site as well as reaching out to LPS to see what links should
be put on.
c. Not in Our Town update given by Ms. Gisolfi Ms. Stembridge will
now be part workgroup now. Typically Not in Our Town brings
together various groups (community (cultural groups, LICA), members
from School Committee, Town government, HRC, etc..) to stop hate,
address bullying, and build safe, inclusive communities. Discussion of
next steps to move this initiative forward. Need future discussion on
whether LHRC should recommend to the BOS to move forward to
support this initiative and what that would entail. Action Item: Ms.
Gisolfi or Ms. Stembridge will ask for this issue to be on next month's
agenda.
7. Reports and Updates on Human Rights Related Incidents and
Programs from Committee Members
a. No Human Rights Related Incidents reported
b. Ms. Roy noted that Julie Hackett (Superintendent of LPS school) is in
the process of defining a new position Director of Student Safety and
Equity
c. Officer Barry Metro North Advisory Committee met in
Arlington in November looking to put on big regional event; Police
officer and SRO are back in the bureau; noted Police Department, lost
1 person, 1 retiring in Jan.; 3 new hires; 4 in field training (through
December) demographics 1 Latino, rest all white men, went

through 46 names to get 10 people; Toys for Tots this Saturday in from
of CVS.
d. Ms. Brodner also requested that get mins out within a week of the
meeting, Clerk suggested that while minutes were being reviewed, a
list of action items could be sent out to associated individuals. Ms.
Brodner also asked about the status of the request made to the
selectmen over the summer for funding for anti-bias training for town
meeting members.
8. Additional Public comments — Valerie Overton noted that LexPride
offers anti-bias training and Pamela Thames asked if such training
just could be part of orientation.
