Lexington Community Center
Present: Julie Ann Shapiro, Betty Borghesani, Ellen Cameron, Bonnie Teitleman, , Camille
Goodwin, Rich McDonough, John Zhao, Sudhir Jain, Sandra Shaw, Jyotsna Kakullavarapu
Staff: Christine Dean, Charlotte Rodgers, Hemali Shah, Melissa Interess
Betty and Julie Ann presented a gift to Charlotte Rogers for her retirement. Several people
thanked Charlotte and acknowledged her many contributions to Lexington. Charlotte spoke of
her "amazing opportunity, remarkable people and relationships" in Lexington.
Public Comments:
Norma Floyd requested a display of senior information at the Community Center. Christine
Dean is working on something for the lobby area with the Woodworkers Guild.
Sophia Ho announced a senior gathering at Brookhaven in honor of MLK.
Approval of October COA minutes with edit—Julie Ann Shapiro was present but not listed.
Staff Reports
Melissa Interess-Human Services
• Requested COA Board members volunteer for either Thanksgiving 11/20 or Holiday
lunch on 12/18. She will send an email.
• Discussed date for January COA Board Meeting—The group agreed to keep 1/2/19.
• Invited board members to volunteer for an advisory group to the Town of Lexington
Mental Health & Wellness Task Force. Bonnie, Ellen, Jyotsna, Sudhir expressed interest.
Melissa will follow it up with an email.
Hemali Shah-Senior Services
• Windowpane shop sale 12/1- 12/21 along with silent auction. Donations welcome
(tchotchkes, jewelry).
• Event: Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol one-man show 12/19 2-3:45PM
Christine Dean-Community Center
Haunted House 10/26 was a great success.
• QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training done for CC staff
• New curb cut in front of the building will be done 11/10
• Early Community Center closings on eves of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year
Charlotte Rodgers
• GEN SILENT, a film about LGBTQ aging was shown at the library, sponsored by HSC and
HS, attended by 40 people. Movie will be available at the Library for checkout.
Liaison Reports
Minuteman Senior Services -Gary Fallick
• MMSS annual meeting honored Charlotte with a certificate of appreciation.
• Annual report statistics:
0 3,276 Lexington residents received MMSS services at a value of$3.3 million.
0 93 Lexington residents received Protective Services last year.
0 325 Lex residents received SHINE counseling last year.
Community Center Advisory Committee- Sandra Shaw
• Looking at CPR training set up in memory of Dr Dan Palent
• Discussed policy around donations to the Community Center.The Community Center
cannot accept many kinds of donations. DPW has a list of where donations can be
made; Christine Dean is also working on a list as well as a Center wish list.
Transportation-Sudhir Jain attended, no quorum
• Tri-town transportation meeting to explore communities working together for
efficiencies in transportation.
Friends of the Council of Aging -Rich and Ellen
• Silent Auction Fund Raiser 12/1- 12/15 during Windowpane shop sale.
Disability Commission- Bonnie Teitleman
• Annual report highlighted program survey and action plan addressing disparity in
disabled and minority student suspensions from school;
• Reviewed new trail, parking at Cotton Farm.
Human Services- Betty Borghesani
• QPR training 11/15 9:30-11:30 at the Community Center
• William James College Interface- a mental health/substance use referral service for
Lexington residents will go live in November. Public awareness campaign will
accompany roll out.
o Residents can call, explain what they are looking for; Interface will connect them
with clinicians who have been vetted, follow up to be sure connections made.
o It's not a crisis service
Recreation Committee-Julie Ann, Ellen
• Working on an upgrade for the track.
Vision 20/20 Committee-Jyotsna Kakullavarapu
• Julie Hackett, Superintendent of Schools attended last meeting; willing to come to COA.
• Planning 2020 celebration at LHS.
Housing Partnership- Rich McDonough
• Exploring the provision of subsidized housing for municipal employees.
• Belmont Country Club area Assisted Living development - only staff can have a car there.
• Proposal for 12 units to be built across from Wagon Wheel.
Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee - Camille Goodwin
• Traffic challenges -20,000 people come into Lexington for work; 7,000 residents leave
town to work
