October 25, 2018 Meeting Minutes

Approval of 9/27/18 Minutes: Approved
Principal's Report:
• Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
o Superintendent and School Committee
• Panorama Survey
o Need to follow up with parents
■ Clear up some of the misconceptions
■ Send parent note soon acknowledging some of the concerns (Suzy Wang
to share her list with Jennifer Turner)
• May be worthwhile to share some FAQs developed for teachers
■ Plan to send a follow-up notice with what was learned in future
• Particularly useful if the survey will be done annually
• DC Trip
o Additional cost this year is because we are traveling the afternoon earlier and
additional costs associated
■ Most likely communicated, but worthy of emphasis to all
o Communicate trip briefly to Parent Night inbound 6th graders
■ Educate them on the "rite of passage" presented to their future 8th
graders
■ Provide families opportunity to start saving for the expense
o Expensive trip, how to cut down the costs
■ No question that financially challenged students are covered
■ Could a non-PTA entity fundraise to make the trip more affordable for all
• Parent Conferences
o Last year's committee recommendations
■ Sixth grade has more conferences available. Will hold a coffee for
parents, as well.
■ Seventh and eighth grade has fewer slots for struggling students and new
families
■ Would it ever be possible to do small group conferences for families with
teens in similar circumstances?
• Budget
• Substitute teacher position added full time
• Asking for Instructional Coach
Staff Report:
• Hairspray play for November 2 all 7th and 8th grade students
Member Input:
• Maybe more publicity as sixth graders for the DC Trip. Parents should receive more
information ahead of time. Should we have a fundraising committee for the DC trip?
