HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-10-26-BOWMAN-min Bowman Elementary School Site Council Minutes October 26, 2018 7:45-8:45AM Bowman School Conference Room Present: Seth Moeller, Lauren Avery, Roseanne Barbacano, Jenny Corduck, Melinda Webster Loof, Karin Ornstein, & Ellen Day Recorder: Rosanne Barbacano Call to Order: Jenny Corduck at 7:50AM Welcome to new staff representative - Ellen Day • Announcements & Updates • One administration person on site council: Therefore Ellen Day will be present instead of Beth Glick. • Jenny's Parent News: Will include a blurb about site council alerting community that we are seeking a community representative for site council. • Changing start times: Letter went out which highlights a 45 minute later start for LHS and a 5-15 minute later start for elementary, With this proposal, our 7-8 buses would arrive 8:40-8:45am (due to no addition to bus fleet). CONCERNS EXPRESSED INCLUDE: bus arrival causes hardship for bus riding families, a time issue of a "lull" in arrival times for a number of students, no outdoor morning arrival time and impact of after-school programs. There are lots of opportunity for feedback on this issue-both "live" and by a Google format. Consider"early bird" program? The proposed morning schedule: 8:20 playground is open for students, 8:35 first bell, 8:50 second bell and ending school at 3:20. • Review of 2018 MCAS Data Slides • MCAS is part of a bigger"puzzle" of assessment data-Jenny would like to share this information with this council. Information about MCAS will be also shared as a whole staff. Grades 3-5 presently know. SIMS and EPIMS are programs which show data of both students and teachers. DESE has profile pages of school level and sub group performance-not teacher performance. PLC and teacher groups are reviewing their respective data. Discussion was about if data driven evaluations for teachers are in the future. • Next Generation MCAS/ Legacy MCAS slides: Defined the tests and gave information about criteria and Bowman results (examples of Bowman data include, not meeting expectations in mathematics was 5% and 2% in grades 3,4, 31%, presentation of data in grades 3-5 who are high needs was also discussed which reflected notable high need of not meeting expectations). • Student Growth: (SGP): 40-50 is considered moderate growth: Bowman had very high growth in this area in both English Language Arts and Mathematics • Purpose of MCAS: Used to judge curriculum effectiveness, looking at sub groups and used to discuss and consider local data with MCAS data • Standard measures slide: Shows strands of mathematics and ELA and how Bowman, district and state compare • Legacy MCAS Science slide was presented to show the data for 2015-2018 for Bowman • Dates for next meetings: • November 30, 2018 7:45-8:45 • January 25, 2019 7:45-8:45 • March 22, 2019 7:45-8:45 • April 26, 2019 7:45-8:45 • May TBD
