HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-04-09-SC-min 1 LSC Meeting 4/9/18 Minutes Approved – 9/11/18 LEXINGTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING Monday, April 9, 2018 Cary Memorial Building, Estabrook Hall 1605 Massachusetts Avenue Present: Chair, Eileen Jay; Vice Chair, Kate Colburn; Kathleen Lenihan; Deepika Sawhney; Alessandro Alessandrini; Superintendent, Dr. Czajkowski Not Present: Student Representative, Rosanna Jiang The minutes were taken by Kristen Cronin, Executive Assistant to the School Committee and Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent The meeting convened at 6:01 pm Call to Order and Welcome: Chair Eileen Jay called the meeting to order and introduced committee members. Public Comments: None Consent Agenda: 1. Approval of School Department Accounts Payable Warrant dated April 6, 2018 Move to approve the School Department’s accounts payable warrant dated April 6, 2018 in the amount of $1,541,726.05 – Approved (5-0) 2. Vote to Approve Lexington High School 2018-2019 International Exchange Trip to Munich/Berlin 3. Vote to Approve Lexington High School 2018-2019 International Exchange Trip to Paris/Antony, France & Geneva, Switzerland Items 2 and 3 on the consent agenda Approved 5-0. Agenda: Vote to approve last day of school – June 22, 2018 Motion to approve June 22, 2018 as the final day of school for all schools except Bridge elementary – Approved (5-0) Motion to approve June 25, 2018 as the final day of school for Bridge elementary – Approved (5-0) Discussion of Master Planning Meeting Committee Update Kate Colburn led the discussion and provided a brief background history of School Committee’s last master planning meeting in 2014 and the Ad Hoc School Master Planning Committee that was formed as a result from that meeting. The Ad Hoc Committee worked with SMMA (architectural & consulting firm) and a menu of options were developed that School Committee could choose from to increase school capacity in order to meet growing enrollment. Ultimately, School Committee along with the Board of 2 LSC Meeting 4/9/18 Minutes Approved – 9/11/18 Selectmen and the two finance committees came up with a plan that included rebuilding Hastings Elementary School with 9 additional classrooms; adding modular classrooms to Fiske, Bridge and Bowman elementary schools; and building additions on Clarke and Diamond Middle Schools. It was decided and agreed upon by committee members that there was a need to refresh the Master Planning Committee that was created in 2014 and to develop a new Master Capital Plan for the next 5-10 years. School Committee is looking for support and expertise from other boards in town (BOS, Capital Expenditures, Appropriation Committee, etc.) and will seek representation from other boards, committees and community members on the Master Planning Committee. School Committee Letter to Legislators Regarding Gun Violence Kate Colburn read a letter drafted by the School Committee to legislators urging state and federal lawmakers to enact stricter gun control. A Motion was made that the School Committee sign and send the discussed letter encouraging stricter gun control legislation to Massachusetts and US elected officials. Approved (-5-0) School Committee remained in open session to attend a Joint Meeting with the Board of Selectmen at Town Hall
