AREA FORM
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION ❑ see continuation sheet
Describe architectural, structural and landscape features and evaluate in terms of other areas within the community
Liberty Heights is one of the few areas in Lexington laid out on a grid system. The area encompasses the top of a substantial but
unnamed hill in East Lexington south of Massachusetts Avenue. Houses in the original development were built primarily in the
1910s and 20s and are generally two-story frame structures though there are a few brick and stuccoed houses. Styles represented
include Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Four -Square, Bungalow, and Dutch Colonial Revival. An outstanding
example of a bungalow is at 14 Chase Avenue and an unusual Four -Square of rusticated concrete blocks is at 47 Taft Avenue.
These earlier houses are interspersed with post -World War II infill, primarily Garrison Colonial, Ranch, Cape, and later Colonial
Revival styles.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE ❑ see continuation sheet
Explain historical development of the area. Discuss how this relates to the historical development of the community.
The Library Heights subdivision was laid out in late 1909 probably in response to the electric street car line on Massachusetts
Avenue, which began service in 1899. In addition to the area shown on the sketch map, Liberty Heights also includes some lots
on the streets south of Taft though does not extend all the way to Massachusetts Avenue. Most of the original lots had thirty-foot
frontage and were eighty feet deep, but none of the houses were built on just one lot—all occupy several lots combined.
