ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and

one of over a dozen houses in late nineteenth century picturesque styles
built on Winthrop Road, this house draws most of its features from the Shingle
Style: polygonal turret with peaked roof; curved, shingled lintel in the gable
window; and porch with shingled balustrade.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state
history and how the building relates to the development of the community.)
This house was built by Walter R. Champney, a tea broker in Boston. It
was one of the first houses to be built on Winthrop Road which was put through
in 1894.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
According to Hudson, Walter R. Champney died in 1911 at the age of 76 although he is still listed in the 1915 directory.
From 1916 to 1956 this was the home of Edwin B. Worthen,prominent Lexington historian and president of the
Lexington Savings Bank. Worthen was born in Lexington in 1879 and grew up at 25 Maple Street. He married Lora
Heal of Belfast, Maine in 1906 and purchased 5 Winthrop Road in 1916. He remained here until his death in 1956.
