The building was built by Hammon Reed (b. 1829, d. 1911) , a real estate
dealer who had an office in Boston. A member of an old Lexington family, Reed
served as overseer of the poor, chairman of the selectmen, chairman of the
school committee and justice of the peace. He was a member of the first board
of trustees of the Lexington Savings Bank.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
This is one of Lexington's first Mansard Style houses. Although the
building is deteriorated, all of its original features remain: the slate roof
with rows of hexagonal slates, the brackets at the eaves, the columned porch,
the projecting window caps, and the rope moldings at the corners. In 1983
the owners requested a zoning change so that the building might be used for
commercial purposes (it is just at the edge of the central business district) .
The petition was denied, but evidently the owners intend to save it, for in
April 1984 staging was put up and repairs begun.
