BUILDING FORM (47 Robinson Road)
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
Located at the end of Robinson Road in the northern part of Lexington, 47 Robinson Road is a two-story dwelling which
exhibits elements of the Craftsman style in its stuccoed exterior and its slate hip roof with overhanging eaves and exposed
rafters. Resting above a fieldstone foundation, the front facade is three bays wide and is fronted by a single-story porch
supported by plain posts resting on a stuccoed wall. Under the porch, the center entrance is flanked by sidelights. On either
side of the entrance there is a three-sided bay window consisting of a 8/1 sash flanked by 6/1. On the second story of the
facade the central three-sided window contains three 4/1 windows with an individual 8/1 sash on either side. Centered on the
front roof slope is a hip-roofed dormer with exposed rafters and containing three small diamond-paned windows.
The north elevation is completely covered in stucco while the south side is partially sheathed in wood shingles which extend
up to the second floor window sills. Extending behind the main house block is a two-story, wood-shingled addition with a
lower level garage.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and
tlye role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
This house was constructed for Reuben and Edith Mead in 1915. Assessor's records indicate that in 1915 the Meads were
living in Somerville but owned a 6 1/2 acre parcel of land on Grove Street which included a small house. By 1916 Reuben
Mead had constructed a new$5000 house on the property in addition to the$750 cottage. In 1930 the Mead property also
included a garage and hen house and the acreage of the land had increased to 11.82 acres on Robinson Road. By the late
1930s the property was occupied by Richard Morris. Members of the Morris family continued to own the property until the
1960s.
