ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION ❑see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
11 Revere St. (MHC#754) is one of a number of front-gabled Italianate farmhouses in Lexington but is distinguished by the fact
that it still has its associated barn(MHC#755). The house is rectangular with a rear ell, 2'/stories,three-by-three bays, and
front gabled with an exterior chimney on the southwest elevation of he main block. The two-by-two bay two-story rear ell has an
end ridge chimney. The house is set on a fieldstone foundation, clad with wood clapboards, and roofed with asphalt shingles. A
shed-roofed one-story one-by-three bay addition on a concrete block foundation is located on the northeast elevation. The main
entry is on the facade, a secondary entry with a porch on the southwest elevation, and the windows are 2/2 double hung sash, those
on the first floor longer and with projecting cornices. The 1'/z-story barn is now a side-gabled two-car garage.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE ❑ see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the
role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
Lexington assessors' records indicate that this house was built in 1873-1874 by Benjamin Gleason, for Gleason had bought the
land on which it stands in February 1873 without any buildings on it,was assessed later that year for an unfinished house on the
lot, and in 1874 for the completed house. It is not clear whether or not this was the same person as the Benjamin F. Gleason who
in 1851 had built the house now at 23 Revere St. (MHC#760). In any event, this Benjamin Gleason sold the 11 Revere St.
house in 1881 to a Samuel Holloway, who is described in the 1887 Directory as a picture frame manufacturer and in later
Directory's as a gilder who worked in Boston, and Holloway owned the house into the 20th century.
