Date April, 1984 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.) This is one of relatively few substantial houses built in the late nineteenth century in East Lexington,which did not share the suburban develop- ment experienced by Lexington Center then. Shingle Style in massing, it is embellished with a few decorative features including a porch with balustrade above with finials, and a lunette and oriel window. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The house was built by Rufus Wellington Holbrook (b. 1830, d. 1898) r shortly before his death,on land purchased from the Pierce family. Holbrook was in the milk and grocery business and from before 1875 until after 1906 a grocery store under his name was operated in the brick store on Massachusetts Avenue opposite Pleasant Street. Holbrook was a selectman from 1889 to 1893 and a member of the N.E. Associated California Pioneers of 1849.
