ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
Located at the southwest corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Audubon Road, 2142 Massachusetts Avenue is a two-story,hip-
roofed dwelling constructed in a Colonial Revival style in the early 20th century. The Massachusetts Street facade is fronted by a
single-story,three-bay wide porch supported by pairs of Doric columns. Underneath the porch the simple doorway is flanked by
a pair of modern 1/1 windows. There are two window openings on the second floor of the facade and a hip dormer centered on
the front roof slope containing a pair of 6/1 windows that are probably indicative of the original sash configuration. There is a
two-story,three-sided projection at the rear of the east elevation. The projection on the west side is fronted by a deck.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
This property stands on part of the land subdivided by Augustus Scott(see 277 Waltham Street,MHC#461)in 1903. This
house appears to have been built between 1910 and 1920; it was originally known as 614 Massachusetts Avenue. The first
listing found for the property indicates that Dr. George W. Day, a dentist, was living here in 1915. Dr. Day and his wife Ethel
are listed as the occupants on both the 1920 and 1930 Census returns. In 1941 the house was conveyed to George and Helen
Kirk(Book 6537,Page 573). Members of the Kirk family still own the property today.
