Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. Built several years before the adjacent Viano or Theater Block, the commercial block at the southeast corner of Muzzey Street and Massachusetts Avenue is a two-story structure with a wood and brick first floor and stuccoed upper level, crowned by a projecting bracketed cornice with curved ornamental end blocks with raised decoration. Painted brick piers separate the first floor components. Between the brick piers, the renovated/altered storefronts consist of multi-paned windows with transoms, set on brick bases with concrete caps. The main storefront on the Mass. Ave. elevation is capped by a bold pediment. The entrance to the upper level is located on the Muzzey Street elevation. The second floor windows have molded surrounds and are arranged individually, in pairs and in sets of three. Most retain what appears to be an original 6/1 configuration; a few contain 1/1 sash. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s)the owners/occupants played within the community. This commercial block was constructed in 1912 on the site of the Reed house which was moved back. It was originally numbered 468 to 472 Massachusetts Avenue. In 1918 the tenants included a grocery store in the corner storefront with a cobbler next door.
