HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
According to E.B. Worthen, the Hadley family (who lived here in the early
1900s) , claimed that the house was moved here from Arlington Heights, at some
unknown time. Charles Hadley, in the early 1930s, was owner and publisher of
the Lexington Townsman (newspaper) , which Alan Adams bought out, and republished
as the Lexington Minute Man. The editorial and printing office of the Townsman
was in a shed attached to this house.
QG4,&: E.B. Worthen identifies 536 Massachusetts Avenue as the "David Penny house."
Penny was a potter whose shop was on Massachusetts Avenue at the lower corner of
Curve Street (Worthen) . Penny was baptized in 1758, died in 1830. (See Burr
Church collection, Lexington Historical Society.)
