ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION:
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
The house at 11 Leonard Road is an unusual 2 %2-story farmhouse dating to the late 19th century which appears to have seen a
number of alterations in the 201h century. The building is sheathed in wood clapboards and outlined by simple cornerboards with
overhanging eaves that end in returns. The broad four-bay wide elevation is now the principal fagade and faces south with an
offcenter pedimented Colonial Revival entrance flanked by a pair of 6/1 sash to the west and two individual windows to the east.
Rising from the roof above the entrance is a gable dormer and a fieldstone chimney is centered on the ridge. Set on a poured
concrete foundation, a narrow connector of recent construction connects the east end of the building with a gablefront former
barn.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the
owners/occupants played within the community.
This house originally had a Woburn Street address- Leonard Road was not laid out until the 1930s.
The first owner was Leonard K. Dunham who bought a parcel of land containing more than three acres from W.H. Homan's
estate in 1895 (Book 2390, Page 188). The 1899 directory lists Dunham's occupation as fish dealer. The 1906 directory lists
him as a grocer and in 1915 he is described as a farmer. In 1930 Leonard was living here with his wife Katherine and son
Leonard,Jr. It was later occupied by Leonard Jr. and by another son,Robert. The property remained in the Dunham family
until 1979 when it was sold by Robert and Barbara Dunham.
