BUILDING FORM (1 Hill Street)
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
This stuccoed 1 1/2-story variation on the Tudor Revival style is notable for its unusual asymmetrical jerkinhead roof form,
echoed in the small entry porch at the base of the longer roof slope. Both of the clipped front gables display vertical half-
timbered stick work and triangular braces supporting the wide eaves overhang. The porch is supported by tapered wooden
posts resting on a low stuccoed wall. The predominant window is a 6/1 sash which appears both individually and in a set of
three adjacent to the entrance. The windows are flanked by shutters and fitted with exterior storms. Punctuating the west
slope of the asphalt-shingled roof are a pair of gable dormers with triangular braces supporting the base of the eaves. To the
east of the main house block is a single-story stuccoed sunporch lit by continuous 3 x 4-light window panels and topped by a
simple balustrade.
A driveway extends to the west of the house, terminating at a gablefront garage(MHC #1069) sheathed in a drop wooden
siding and decorated by vertical stickwork and triangular roof braces on the gablefront and exposed rafters on the side
elevations. A double-wide, overhead garage door replaces the original door.
H roRICAL NARRATIVE
Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and
the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
This house was constructed for Lester and Ida Andrews in 1922. The house occupies Lot 24 on the "Plan of House Lots in
Lexington Belonging to George Tewksbury, dated May 8, 1910"(Middlesex County Plan Book 195, Plan 45). The Town
Lists indicate that the Andrews were living at 9 Shirley Street in 1922 but had relocated to 1 Hill Street by 1923. The 1923
Town Valuation lists places the value of the house at$4,500. Lester Andrews was employed as a plumber and continued to
live in the house until his death in 1974 or 1975. Mrs. Andrews remained in the house until about 1980. The present owners,
Lawrence and Roni Woods, purchased the property in 1982 (Book 14780/Page 202).
