The funds for a Grove Street school were appropriated at town meeting,March 28, 1960. Estabrook School was dedicated on
October 8, 1961. It was designed by the architectural firm of Clinch, Crimp,Brown&Fisher. The firm also designed other
schools in Lexington including the Fiske School,Bridge School and Bowman School.
The school is named after Joseph Estabrook(1669-1733),the first school teacher in Lexington. Born in Concord,he bought a
200 acre farm in Lexington in 1693.According to Hudson's History of the Town of Lexington, "In 1716 Captain Estabrook was
employed as a teacher and continued his school five months, for which 15 pounds were paid him from the town treasury."
Joseph Estabrook also served as Town Clerk, was elected Selectman several times and served a term as Representative to the
General Court which was the Massachusetts Colony's legislature. As a Captain he also commanded a local military company.
