ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
The house at 30 Grove Street is a 2 1/2-story, side-gabled dwelling which is sheathed in clapboards and capped by an
asphalt-shingled roof with cornice returns on the gable ends. The three-bay facade is fronted by a hipped-roof, single-story,
Craftsman-style porch with columns consisting of sets of three 2 x 4s with horizontal members at the mid section. The
geometric balusters are set above an airspace enclosed by vertical boards. A centrally located pedimented projection enlarges
the porch in front of the entrance. The center entrance contains a wooden door with 3 x 2-panes over three vertical panels.
The 2/2 windows are set into molded surrounds, those on the first floor are somewhat longer. An exterior brick chimney rises
along the south gable end.
Extending behind the main house is a two-story ell with a modern deck fronting the upper level. Behind the ell is a large two-
story addition constructed c.1970. It rests on a concrete foundation and is lit by 1/1 windows. There are three overhead
garage doors on the south side of the addition.

HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and
the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
The exact date of construction of this house is not known at this time. It is not depicted on the 1875 Map of Lexington. The
1906 Atlas indicates that the property, consisting of four buildings, was then owned by Olive Stroh(wife of Frederick Stroh).
Directories indicate that the Stroh family lived here from about 1895 to 1913.
The house has been owned by the Cosgrove family since about 1918. The 1920 Valuation List indicates that William J.
Cosgrove paid ta,:es on a house, barn and two acres of land. The house was remodeled into a two-family dwelling about
1936. In 1987 the old three-car garage was torn down and replaced by a new building.
