ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and
evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.)
Part of Five Fields, a community of contemporary houses designed and developed
by The Architects Collaborative (TAC) of Cambridge, this house, with its vertical
siding and pitched roof could be considered TAC's version of ranch style. It was
designed for steeply sloping sites: the lower level is below grade at the front of
the house but at ground level at the rear. The upper level has a living/dining/
kitchen area as well as some bedrooms; the lower level has additional bedrooms, a
playroom, furnace room, and storage space. This particular house was inventoried
because it is one of the few in Five Fields that has not been modified by an
addition.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state
history and how the building relates to the development of the community.)
This house is one of the original models offered by The Architects
Collaborative (TAC) and the one most commonly built in Five Fields (see Five Fields
area form) . Other examples are at 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, and 12 Field Road; 10, 16, 18,
20, 22, 23, 26, 28, 29, 31, 34, and 37 Barberry Road; and 524, 542, and 552 Concord
Avenue. Depending on the overall length, this house could be built with two, three,
or four bedrooms on the upper level -- known as Type A, B, or C, respectively. It
could also be built with one. story or two, in the latter case known respectively as
Type .Al, Bl, or Cl. Most of the houses have subsequently been added to and some,
especially 29 Barberry Road, altered almost beyond recognition of the original
house form.
