BUILDING FORM (23 Edgewood Road) ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the community. Constructed in 1924, 23 Edgewood Road is an example of the Dutch Colonial style which was utilized throughout Lexington during the early 20th century. The 1 1/2-story, side-gambrel dwelling is sheathed in wood shingles above a rubble foundation. Centered on the three-bay facade, the main entrance contains a six-panel door which is sheltered by a gable- roofed porch supported by Roman Doric columns with a stick balustrade. On either side of the entrance is a pair of 6/6 windows with molded surrounds and shutters. Spanning the front roof slope is a shed dormer punctuated by two individual 4/4 windows at the center flanked by a 6/6 window on each outside edge. The west end of the house is spanned by a single- story, flat roofed room with two 6/6 windows on the front face. Projecting from the east elevation is a shingled addition constructed in 1977, resting on a poured concrete foundation and including a side entrance porch and deck. This section is lit by casement windows. A stone retaining wall runs along the front property line. A driveway descends downhill to the west of the house. , 1-1//STORICAL NARRATIVE Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners%occupants played within the community. This house was constructed in the early 1920s, soon after Edgewood Road was laid out. The lot is shown as part of Lot A on a plan by F.P. Cutter, prepared in 1924. The 1925 Lexington Valuation List assesses Raymond W. Hathaway for a house on Edgewood Road valued at$6500, sitting on a lot measuring 9,421 square feet. The previous year Hathaway, a clerk, was living at 39 Clarke Street with his wife, Grace. Directories indicate that the Hathaways only lived at 23 Edgewood Road a short time. By 1928 Andrew and Adelaide McCoubrey were living here and continued to live here until about 1940. John and Edith Sloane owned and occupied the house from the late 1940s until 1972. The property was purchased by Michael and Pamela Carvey in 1975.
