BUILDING FORM
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION ❑see continuation sheet
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community.
151 East St. was once a Queen Anne farmhouse but has lost almost all its original finishes. The original house is rectangular with
a rear ell, 2'/z stories,three-by-two bays, and front-gabled. The rear ell was originally two stories, one-by-two bay, and front-
gabled with a ridge chimney. The house is set on a fieldstone foundation, clad with wood clapboards, and roofed with asphalt
shingles. In a recent renovation, the main entry was moved from the original facade to the northwest corner of the side elevation;a
dorway surround added with a molded cornice, fluted pilasters, and full-length sidelights; windows replaced with the present 12/12
double hung sash; and a large shed-roofed addition put on the entire west elevation of the ell.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE ❑ see continuation sheet
Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local (or state) history. Include uses of the building, and the
role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
This house was built in 1884 by Joseph Spaulding on a lot on which there was an existing house that had been built about 1820 by
Loa Locke. Spaulding had bought the lot with the old house in 1872 from Loa Locke's daughter-in-law;he built this house in
1884 and took down the old one in 1889. Historical photographs show this house as a front-gabled Queen Anne farmhouse with a
full-width porch. In 1894 this house and land on both sides of East St. was purchased by Levi Doran, who moved to Lexington
from Brookline and was the grandfather of Guy Doran, the present owner of Doran Greenhouses. In the 1980s this house was
completely remodeled by developer Mark Moore as part of a condominium development. At that time the porch and other Queen
Anne finishes were removed, the doorway moved from the front to the side, the present dorr surround installed, the windows
replaced, and the addition put on the rear ell.
