BUILDING FORM (12 Coolidge Avenue) ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the community. The house at 12 Coolidge Avenue(MHC#1045) is a 1 1/2-story, brick veneered dwelling set above a rubble foundation. The brick is laid in a stretcher bond with some black bricks mixed in and a row of soldier brick acts as a watertable above the foundation. In contrast to the more common gable roof, this Tudor Revival dwelling consists of a hipped roof central block with a hipped roof cross section centered on the front facade. Descending on either side of the front projection is a side gable with a hipped dormer. The overhanging eaves display exposed rafters. On the front of the main block, the wall above the descending gable is sheathed in novelty siding. A brick walk leads to the main entrance on the west side of the facade which is sheltered by a glazed entrance porch with half timbering decorating the porch's front gable. Sheltered by the porch, the original door has been replaced by a metal replacement unit. Adjacent to this entrance and centered on the first floor is a set of four 4/1 windows. An additional entrance is located to the east but lacks a stoop. The four-panel door incorporates a lunette and is flanked by fluted pilasters supporting a simple entablature with dentil detailing. The upper level of the facade has individual 6/1 windows. Windows on the side elevations consist primarily of 4/1 sash. Extending behind the main block is a single-story sunporch with semi- elliptical fanlights over the windows. The(ront yard is shaded by large maple trees and a paved driveway extends along the east side of the house terminating at a two-car garage (MHC#1046) capped by a ierkinhead roof with exposed rafters on the front. The front of the garage is shedthed in wide clapboards while the side walls are brick. HISTORICAL NARRATI`JE Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners/o,:cupants played within the community. This house was the first constructed on Coolidge Avenue. It occupies Lot 11 of the Hancock Birches subdivision which was laid out on land belonging to Harold D. Diehl in 1925 (Middlesex County Plan Book 374, Plan 37). The land originally encompassed lots 12-14 of the Oakmount Park subdivision. In 1928 Helen Diehl of Arlington was assessed for three houses as well as additional lots in the Hancock Birches subdivision. Lot 11 contained 9480 square feet and included a house valued at$13,000 as well as a garage valued at$1,000. The following year the same property, with house valued at$12,000, was owned by Sara Goodwin. Sara's husband, Charles O. Goodwin, was in the wholesale beef business. Originally known as 3 Coolidge Avenue, the house was owned by the GoodNvins until 1954 when it was sold to Ronald and Eleanor Winder. Mrs. Winder sold the house to the present owner in 1971.
