If checked,you must attach a completed National Register Criteria Statement form. ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. The house at 38 Colony Road is a simple Four Square-type dwelling displaying a characteristic box-like form, capped by a hip roof with front hip dormer. The single-story porch spanning the facade is supported by simple posts with a stick balustrade. The windows now contain modern 1/1 sash. There is a small addition projecting from the east elevation. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Discuss the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state)history. Include uses of the building, and the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. This house dates to the early 20th century. Colony Road was originally known as Francis Street. Deeds indicate that the land (lots 95-100)was sold by John Baker to Elizabeth Burton,wife of James,in 1911 (Book 3631, Page 165). James and Elizabeth lived here with their son, James J. Burton,Jr. The elder Burton's occupation is listed as superintendent;the younger worked as an auto mechanic. Members of the Burton family continued to own the house until 1983.
