BUILDING FORM (76 Blake Road) ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the community. Notable as a published example of a"Manor"house, 76 Blake Road is a 2 1/2-story, side-gabled dwelling constructed in 1938. Set on a concrete foundation,the wood-shingled house displays a three-bay wide facade with a second story, "Garrison"-style overhang. The center entrance contains a six-panel door flanked by full sidelights which are two panes wide. The pedimented porch is supported by two Roman Doric columns resting on a brick stoop. On either side of the entrance is a 8/8 window with shutters. Centered over the entrance is a second-story round window filled with simple tracery and accented by four voussoirs. The left gable end is two bays wide and displays an exterior brick chimney. The elevation is fronted by a single-story sunporch with sliding windows. A single-story glazed breezeway connects the house to a single-car, gablefront garage with an overhead door facing the street. The rear roof slope is spanned by a shed dormer sheathed in vinyl siding. There is a modern bay window on the rear elevation. The lot, located at the corner of Preston Road, is outlined by a picket fence. l HISTORICAL NARRATIVE Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and the role(s) the owners,occupants played within the community. This house was constructed in 1938 for John and Margaret Harris. It was part of the Lexington Building Trust subdivision, a plan of which was prepared in May 1937 (see Middlesex County Book 6132 Page 28). The property includes lots 9, 10, 11 and part of lot 12 of the subdivision, and encompasses 11,560 square feet. A plan of the property was prepared in 1938. In 1939 the house was valued at$7250.
