BUILDING FORM (14 Bertwell Road) ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the community. The house at 14 Bertwell Road is unusual for its use of live edge wood siding over the entire exterior as opposed to the use of live edge siding with stucco visible on other houses of this era in Lexington. The two-story house rests on a concrete foundation and is capped by a steeply-pitched, asphalt-shingled hip roof with a gable extension to the left, punctuated by a brick chimney. The offcenter, vertical plank door is capped by a shallow shed hood with a small 2 x 2-light hinged window next to the entrance. To the left of the entrance is a pair of elongated, doublehung 12/9 windows; on the other side there is a pair of 9/6 windows. Upstairs, over the entrance there is a pair of 6/6 windows and an individual window of the same configuration. The right end of the house is two bays deep with 9/6 windows on the first floor and 6/6 upstairs. The shed dormer above has two 3 x 2-light windows. The other end of the house has two pairs of elongated 12/9 windows. HISTORICAL NARRATIVE D rscribe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and ty role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community. Bertwell Street was laid out in the late 1920s although many of the lots were not built upon until later. The property consists of Block 7, Lots 6 & 7 of the L.B.T. (Lexington Building Trust?) subdivision. In 1927 and 1928 the lot was owned by Henry Stone of Cambridge. By 1931 it had been purchased by Roy A. Ferguson. In 1932 Ferguson, who lived at 19 Bertwell, was first assessed for a house valued at$6,000 at 14 Bertwell Road. The first occupants of the house were Edwin and Lena Trafford, who lived here from about 1931 to 1935. He was employed as a bond salesman. Roy Ferguson sold the property prior to 1945. Marion and Harold Furness purchased the house in the mid 1950s and members of the family still own it today. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Lexington Directories, various years. Lexington, Town of.
