HomeMy WebLinkAbout2230 Two reports of a committee on the Town House (Town Hall), 1846The Committeee to whom was referred the
subject contained in the 11 Art in the Warrant
for a Town Meeting March 3d 1846, respectfully
submit the following Report.
They have viewed several peices of Land and
obtained the prices of two, one lot owned by
Mr John Viles containing about 3/4 of an acre
situated nearly opposite the Woburn road, can be
purchased for one Thousand dollars, Mr Baldwin
Locke offers a piece of Land cntaining nearly
two acres situated between the house of said
Locke & Dr John Nilson for a $1100, and after
some enquiring respecting the cost of a Town house
we ascertain that a building 40 feet by 60. Two
storys high &, finished, in a work man like & substant
-iel manner can be built for &3,000.
Your Committee deem the subject submitted to
them of sufficient importance, to require the
deliberate consideration of the Town, and believe
it is for the interest of the Town to erect a commodious
& suitable building for the transaction of Town business.
They would recommend that the Town purchase
the Lot of land offered by Mr Baldwin Locke & build
a Town house on the same. In regard to the centre
of population we are of opinion, that in recommending
the above location, a majority of the inhabitants of
the Town are better convened than at any other place,

A part of your Committee to whom was referred the
11th Article in your last Warrant concerning a Town
Hall beg leave to submit the Following
Report
The undersigned could not consistently agree with a
majority of your Committee in recomending the Town
to purchase a Lot of Balgwin Locke and erect a Town
Hall upon it at an expense from 4 1/2 to 5000. Dollars -
more especially as that location is much below the
center of Population of this Town. Your Committee that
are also of the opinion the Town can be accomodated
with all room they will want by the First Parish
and thereby some at least 200 Dollars - yearly or
that they might find a location which would better
accomodate the Town which could not be considered
by the Committee under[?] the very restrictive
Article by which this Committee was raised.
Therefore your Committee recommend that the whole subject
be indefinitely postponed in order that if the
Town must have a Town Hall an Article may
be inserted in your Warrant so framed[?] that the
whole Town may be represented in it all of which
is respectfully submitted
